History of St Sylvesters GAA Club

Attached is a short history of St Sylvesters compiled by Ashley White. I had a small history of Malahide before and will resurrect. I also have some old pictures in the Scrapbook Gallery and some other old pictures in a Scrapbook section but it would be really nice to build on Ashley's work and I would welcome any contributions either by email to info@stsylvesters.ie or simply commenting on this article. Naomh Sailbheastar / St Sylvesters

Saint Sylvester served as pope for 25 years and lived in the 4th century. He died in 335 AD and the Saint Sylvester feast day is 31st of December.

The St. Sylvesters club was formed back in 1903 under the patronage of Saint Sylvester.

The club colours of royal blue with the St.Patricks green sash have remained the club colours since that 1903 affiliation.

Back in 1939 St. Sylvesters won the Dublin Junior Championship.

The outbreak of World War II saw the end of the St. Sylvester club till it regrouped in 1960.

In 1963 St Sylvesters won the Dublin Junior Championship for the second time and in 1970 the club gained promotion to senior level.

Unfortunately in 1973 the club folded.

1974 saw the formation of the Malahide Gaelic Club to cater for juveniles.

1975 St Sylvesters GAA club reformed and developed rapidly to become an integral part of the Malahide Community.

The Ladies Section started in 1995.

92 years after the St Sylvesters club was officially formed back in 1903.

The first ladies trophy for the club came in 1999 by the then U16's panel winning the B League.

Major sporting achievement in the club history was winning the Dublin County Football Championship in 1996 and reaching the final at the Leinster Club Championship in the same year.

St Sylvesters also won the Dublin minor football championship in 1992, 2000, and 2001.
