Minor hurlers going well
As the game crept into the second quarter of the first half there was nothing between the teams until Isles goaled twice without reply . Now was time for Syls to stand up and be counted with the score at Isles 2 goals and 4 points to Syls 2 points !
Again Syls launched another attack with Philip Ryan winning a great ball in the air after being moved from centre forward to wing back following the injury to goalkeeper Luke Hughes and sending a great ball to Cathal Manning who finished the ball to the net .
Syls then scored two more points with Eoin Cooney scoring a great point from the right wing and Daniel Murphy ( who played terrifically well throughout ) sending over another to leave it Isles 2 goals and 4 points to Syls 1 goal and 4 points . Syls went in 3 points down at halftime .
The second half was completely dominated by a Syls defence who were terrific with a typically assured performance by Sean Foley whose form lately has been terrific and provides much needed steel and leadership to a very young Syls team .
Eoin Cooney was moved to the edge of the square and posed an ever present threat and as a result we got a couple of breaks from a teak tough Isles full back line . From those breaks Sean Graham capitalised on panic in the Isles defence to send the ball to the net .
The stand out score of the game was a cracker of a goal from Cathal Manning who chased a breaking ball out to the 14 yard line and turned swiftly and sent a cracking low ground shot to the back of the Isles net to give the Syls boys a commanding lead that they never subsequently relinquished .
Eamonn McLoughney ( not having trained nor played in 7 weeks with an injured ankle ) gave a brilliant display at full back . Ably supported by Barry Crosse and NIall McCann .
The half back line was marshalled by Mikey Meaney ( who dominated his opposite number throughout ) and well supported by Philip Ryan who played brilliantly when moved back to support the defence and Daniel Deneher .
In the forward line Sean Graham , Brian Walsh and Ciaran Murphy ( who put in a big shift against a very physical Isles defence ) all played well . Eoin Cooney chipped in a couple of nice scores.
Special mention to Jamie Kennedy who started at wing back but had to suddenly transform himself into a goalkeeper and gave a sterling display ( a new career Jamie ??? ) .
Also a special mention to Colm Casey and Joe O Connor ( two of Jimmy Denehers league leading under 16 hurling side ( who made themselves available at short notice ) who both did well when brought into the fray .
This team are as yet unbeaten at minor this year . They are playing some fine hurling now but will have some stern challenges ahead . Well done to a very committed team .
