The GAA in 1916 - Grand Citizens Parade

A Chairde I am writing to you from Tyrone Productions Ltd – a TV and Entertainment company. We have been commissioned by the GAA to produce a half hour show, which will be their 1916 Commemoration event. This historic event will take place in Croke Park on Sunday, 24th April 2016, the day of the Allianz League Division One and Two Football Finals. The event will be televised by TG4. Working very closely with the GAA we aim to create a show that will commemorate 1916, the Proclamation, the story of Gaelic Games and the GAA’s role since 1916.

The show will incorporate large-scale innovative theatre, dance, song, poetry and pageantry that will rouse and move the audiences both in the stadium and the viewing TV Audience.

One important element of the event is a Grand Citizens Parade where we want to include representation from all sectors of Irish life.

As part of this Parade we want a very strong representation from as many GAA clubs in Ireland as possible to be there to carry the flag of their county on this historic day.     Our aim is to have at least 1,000 volunteers from GAA clubs right across the 32 counties represented.  So we are strongly asking for your support to help us achieve this.

It is important to note that volunteers will need to be available for Sunday 24th April for rehearsals in the morning and for the event in the afternoon.    Volunteers will have to arrange their own travel and accommodation (if required) at their own expense.

We want volunteers to be 18 years of age and over as we have children represented in other elements of the show.

Please be advised that the deadline for this event is this Friday the 25th March. We understand how busy thing are with Easter, so we will give you until Monday night to have all names sent to us.  However after this date we cannot guarantee including any clubs in this event.

We would love to see up to 10 members representing each club, (although happy with 1 or 2), and a good cross section of male and female from either football, handball and hurling/camogie teams.

Please keep in mind that this will be a very long day.  You will have to be at Croke Park stadium by 7.45am – 12 noon to take part in the dress rehearsal. All volunteers will be in accommodated on HILL 16.  As this is standing room only, some people may wish to leave after the rehearsal and return an hour before the show.  However we do hope, and encourage as many people as possible to stay for the matches as we would like you to be included in the whole days event.

Each member must wear a club jersey or official item of clothing that represents their club.  Could you please bring one club flag (5 x 3ft) or a club banner (large enough to be held by 2 members, but no bigger).  We want each club to be noticed and represented in the best possible way.  You are all a very important part of this parade and this will be your chance to show Ireland what a great sporting body you are.

We are also looking for 3 people from each County to take a part in the show where they will be representing their County.  This group of sportsmen and women will be taking part in the show as well as the parade, so will be needed for rehearsals on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

As most Counties cannot sign up for this due to the distance from Dublin and rehearsal times, we are asking for any players from other Counties who now live in Dublin to take part.  This will be a lovely opportunity for you, as you will be walking onto the pitch along with the performers holding your County flag and taking part in the main show.  You will also be the one leading your County in the parade with the flag.

Please could you send the following details listed below to myself.  I do not need the names of people attending, just an overall number of how many will attend from each club.
