U12 Football Tournament in Ardara June 2014

 CLG Ard an Rátha.

The club, formed in 1921, is the largest sporting body in the community, and is recognised as one of the strongest of its kind in County Donegal.

We at Sylvester’s wish to thank CLG Ard an Rátha for their kind invitation to participate in the under 12’s Mick Herron Memorial football tournament.

ITINERARY:

Friday 13th June

The mentors will be available from 9pm in the hotel bar to address any last minute questions you might have and to help explain the plan for the following day.

We want to ensure all players get to participate in as many games with as much game time as possible. With so many kids travelling it will not be possible to play everyone for the full game in all matches. Whilst we would love to win this tournament, participation by all will continue to be our priority.

We hope to get the kids to bed at a fairly reasonable hour on Friday as Saturday promises to be a long day for everyone involved.

Saturday 14th June

After breakfast, short team briefing in the hotel at 10.00 AM. In particular we will remind kids that they are representing our club and community and are guests of Ardara. Of course your support as parents and fans at the tournament is essential and we would like all of you to stay and cheer them on for the duration of the games. Location of pitches is 5 minutes out the Nairn & Portnoo road at Pearse Memorial Park. Tournament begins at 12 noon sharp.

12.00am Football tournament in Ardara

There will be two competitions (Syls 1 & Syls 2 teams) run off simultaneously starting at 12 noon. Pitch space is limited and Ardara plan the matches and pitch allocations as best they can. The provisional schedule and teams for the day are set out below;

These will held in the Hotel ballroom. Ardara are organising a quiz night for 8.30 to include ourselves, Ardara and St Pats Donabte. The kids will be mixed into teams to get them mingling. The talent show if we have time and interest is open to all kids for any talent – musical, comedy, funny face etc. At the same time there will be an informal evening for all the family – maybe even a music session – if any parents have musical talents please bring along your instruments!

Finally there is the small matter of the World cup with our close neighbours across the water taking on Italy at 11pm. A nice way to wind down the evening and no doubt will help to send the kids off to sleep.

SUNDAY 15th June 10.30am to 12.00noon

A standing tradition on Sunday morning is the parents and kids “training” session at Portnoo beach Therefore we would like to invite everybody after breakfast on Sunday to the beach for a 'training' session (a Fathers/Mothers versus Sons game with a somewhat compromised set of rules). Please ensure the lads bring swimming togs and towels just in case they get splashed! We have almost 30 kids travelling so we will need our all our fittest and unfittest parents involved.

AND FINALLY:

We owe a great deal of thanks for CLG Ard an Rátha for the invitation to this tournament and their extra-ordinary level of generosity they have offered throughout our stay.

There has been a huge amount of work put into getting organised for this trip. Behind the scenes we have had a hard working and highly effective fund-raising committee who, with your help, have raised funds to provide gear for all the kids in the squad. We would particularly like to thank those people who provided direct financial support – it is hugely appreciated.

Most importantly we acknowledge the kids themselves for all their hard work and commitment over the last few years.

We are delighted to be representing the club in this tournament. St. Sylvester’s have a great tradition in the Ardara tournament and it is hoped that this tradition can be upheld once again this year.

We want to leave a positive lasting impression with our generous hosts, who have continued to offer our club an invitation to their tournament for several years.

Important note for players: You are representing your club, your family and yourself. We would ask that at all times you must have respect for Ardara CLG, the competing teams and the accommodation you are staying in.

Most of all enjoy this time away with your family and friends – it will stay in your memory for a very long time to come.

Follow N4 & M4 signs through Longford and Carrick on Shannon

At Donegal by pass, follow signs for Killybegs

Then follow signs and turn for Ardara

Follow signs to Ardara

  • Route (2) – via Cavan

N3/M3 to Cavan, Enniskillen, Ballyshannon, Donegal

At Donegal by pass, follow signs for Killybegs

Then follow signs and turn for Ardara

  • Route (3) – via Monaghan

M1 to Belfast

Turn off at Ardee exit, Carrickmacross, Monaghan, Aughnacloy, Omagh, Strabane, Lifford, Ballybofay, Fintown, Ardara

Journey time is expected to be around 4 hrs.

One of the groups who travelled in previous years strongly recommend a stop off in the Yeats Tavern run by the Davis family in Drumcliff which is about 3 miles outside Sligo on the Bundoran Rd (Route (1) above). See website - http://www.yeatstavernrestaurant.com/ Route 1 is the preferred route.

ACCOMMODATION:

We have booked all the rooms that were available in the Nesbitt Arms Hotel. It is situated in the middle of the town and therefore very convenient.

There are two places to eat in the hotel itself -

  • Weavers Restaurant on first floor can cater for up to 72 persons.

  • Weavers Bar & Bistro open daily from 9am to 9.30pm serving full a la carte menu & daily specials.

Please note the hotel is small with corridors that can be very noisy with a young herd tearing through and whilst we want the kids to have as much fun as possible we do need to be mindful of other guests. Common sense from all and reminders from parents about behaviour should ensure we have an issue free stay.

MEAL

The hotel is offering a set dinner menu for €20 per adult on the Saturday evening payable on check in. It is very good value and allows the hotel to plan for numbers in advance. We suggest that having all the adults eating together would be the best plan for the Saturday evening. The kids (including siblings who want to) will be fed separately with the Ardara team around 6pm. Given the timings, the meal for the parents should start no later than 6.00/6.15. The mentors will supervise the kids at their meal but you will be required to supervise your own children back in the hotel (we will of course have a number of ‘distractions’ to keep them entertained).

As we will be arriving at different times on the Friday, we will let you decide for yourself that evening.
