U13 Football Roundup

The U13 football leagues are coming to a head for the season with only 3 matches left for each of our 3 teams. The A footballers continue to lead Division 1 after their 8th win in a row, this time against 4th placed Kilmacud Crokes. The first half was an even enough affair with our 2 goals up the hill in Bridgefield . . .

. . giving us daylight our battling performance deserved and we turned 2-07 to 0-6 ahead. We knew Crokes would have to come after us in the second half and when they crashed home a goal with their first attack of the second half we needed to settle back quickly. We did this by reeling off a number of beautiful points and with that goal being Crokes only score of the half and us getting firmly on top we ran out convincing winners on a scoreline of 4-19 to 1-06. This was a magnificent team performance and it is hard to pick out individual players in what was probably our most complete performance of the season but Euan Farquarson epitomised the heart in this team when with the game won and only a few minutes left he threw himself full length to block a pass on their 45, Crokes were not going to be even let out of their own half!

With 3 games to go and top level football assured for next season our fate is in our own hands. What has been most impressive is the players who have come in when needed and performed well. 26 players have played league matches for the A team this season and all have staked a claim for advancement. Indeed the team is getting harder and harder to select!

The B footballers are in a division of A teams and so they have had a hard season as all the teams have a core of strong players. The squad went across to play Castleknock on Saturday and found a similar case, facing a strong spine. While they put in a battling performance they had to settle for second best.

The C’s were badly let down by their opposition who never turned up, despite the players making huge efforts to get back from school activities, the parents helping set up the nets and flags and the referee arriving there was no sign of a team to play against. These hard working and dedicated bunch deserved better.
