U21 hurlers win AET

U21 HC B Clontarf 1 14 St Sylvesters 2 13 (after Extra Time). This was a ding-dong battle in a match that looked like it would be all wrapped up early by Syls when they went in at the break leading by 1-6 to 0-4. From the first Simon Owens point to the great goal by full forward Stephen Keogh and a hat-trick of points from Conor Meaney and two from Colm Byrne Syls dominated throughout the field.

Nevertheless there were some warning signs with the loss of Kevin O Flynn through a hand injury, the squandering of at least 5 or 6 more scores and the need for a great save by David Kennedy to avoid a tighter first half finish.
The tide turned in the second half when a resilient Clontarf team piled on the pressure scoring 7 times 1-6 to Syls 2 scores 1-1. This pressure saw Clontarf leading with only minutes to go when a Simon Owens goal from a Colm Boran free helped Syls to see the game level at full time 2-7 to 1-10.
Extra time, and points from Conor Meaney, Andrew Cunningham and Colm Boran against 2 points from Clontarf left Syls ahead by 1 point at the end of the first half of ten minutes. Another great save from Kennedy in goal kept Clontarf from going ahead.
The second half saw a determined Syls defence hold out many attempts by Clontarf to get another goal and a further scores from Meaney, Cunningham and Owens against 2 Clontarf points meant that the Syls lads had scored a great away win in this knock-out championship.
Overall a very exciting match played in a very sporting way by both teams. Syls scorers were: Conor Meaney (0-5) Simon Owens (1- 2 ) Stephen Keogh (1-0) Colm Byrne (0-3) Andrew Cunningham (0-2) Colm Boran (0-1).
Whitehall up next in the quarter final.
