U12Cs win their league

Pride of place this week goes to the Syls U12 C footballers who, on Saturday, clinched the Division 5 League title with a resounding win our Naomh Barrog B’s. Going in to the game, Barrogs were on the same points as us with Skerries a further point back so anything other than a win could see us finish 3rd. However right from the start when Matthew Brenner powered through from midfield to open the scoring with a point, this great bunch of lads never dropped the intensity.

It was very much a team performance from Paul Downey in goal and the defense of Timmy O’Connor , Daniel Stone , Daire de Burca , Cian Smith , Craig Mc Grattan and Stephen Brady who won every ball coming their way to keep Naomh Barrog scoreless to the midfield of Conor Hoyne and Mathew Brenner and attack of Sam McCormack , Sean Curran , Aaron Lambe , Joaquin Shinbach and Odran Monaghan who combined to score ten goals and six points , truly an overwhelming performance . Credit too must go to team manager, Paul Curran who has the lads playing for each other and with a smile on their faces.

Our worry during the week was that Barrogs might bring their A team to play our C team , the way the lads played it’s a pity they didn’t!

We had 2 other games going on at the same time with the A and B teams finishing out their League campaigns.

The A’s were up against third place Whitehall and being a few players short seemed to affect us mentally in the first half. The attributes of hard work and team work seemed to be forgotten as we turned 4 goals down. The second half was completely different with Syls dominating from the start and only poor decision making where we kept going for goals stopping us from building up a score. The ref had us down for winning the game by a goal but our own tally showed a draw and this was what was reported so leaving us in second place in Division 1.

The B’s were away to Skerries B’s and with a number of their regulars going up to the A’s we knew we would be under pressure (especially given that Skerries A’s had played their match the previous night). However the lads played really well and only for the concession of 2 late goals would have taken the points, however a draw was a good result in the circumstance and the performance was excellent. The B’s consolidated 3rd place in Division 3 which is excellent given that they were out against a lot of A teams.

While the League matches are almost complete (the Ds have one game left and there may be play off matches) we are not finished just yet.

On the 20th October we travel to Salthill/Knocknacarra for a challenge with us hosting them 2 weeks later.

In between we have our Fundraising End of Term Disco on the 25th in the Club
