U13s and U14s get together for Cup football

With it being a hurling week-end and our 14 football team getting a bye in the first round of the U14 Football Cup , Syls u13s and u14s footballers played a challenge match in The Castle on Saturday afternoon. We had about 45 players and all players got a decent run. This will prepare our u14s for the cup competition and also help to integrate the both u14s football teams and u13 footballers for the Feile. Better than any training.

Football roundup

The seniors got back on the winning trail with a fine one point win over a strong Ballymun Kickams at Broomfield. We were six points to nothing down early but fought our way back to a 2-08 to 0-13 win. The Inters suffered their first defeat of the year away to Castlenock but the Junior As had a great win away to Parnells to preserve their unbeaten run and great start t 2012 - Shane and Declan are certainly doing a good job in training both junior squads as the Bs also had a good draw against Plunkets.

U16H Div3 St Sylvesters 2-14 Commercials 1-10 Good home win for the U16s against a strong commercials outfit at Bridgefield. Seniors lose league opener to Plunkets

AFL1 St Sylvesters 0-07 St Oliver Plunkets ER 0-12 I only saw the first half and was disappointed to hear the final score as I thought we were really going to put it up to Plunkets in the second half. This looked more like championship football than most of what I saw last year. Plunkets, with most of their star players on show, starting at a fierce pace and grabbing three points before we got up the field at all. Fair play to our defence with Cian Cleere leading by example, we stood up strong and contained them until our outfield got into the game.

Junior Bs great comeback at Peregrines

AFL9 St Peregrines 1-08 St Sylvesters 1-12 First half was backs to the wall stuff, Peregrines midfield calling the shots despite the best efforts of Reidy and McGinty, but not capitalizing on their chances. Eoin Kelly floated a free into their box for Chris Corcoran to bury, Conor Meehan hit two good points and we only trailed by two at the break. The second half followed the same pattern for a while and when Peregrines goaled it looked bad for us at five points down.

Junior hurlers had a great win over Na Fianna

Corn Fág a Bealach St Sylvesters 3-11 Na Fianna 3-6 It was a great second half performance with two excellent goals from the marauding Barry Cowley, some great long range free taking from Stephen Keogh, a “Lar Corbett” point from out on the side line from the never retiring Claude Scully, an equally fine point from Breandán Flood on the other sideline. Killian Kirrane was chasing like a novice and did some brilliant defending. Paul Christie put in big shift and he got a hatrick of hooks in one passage of play alone. There were a good few old hooks on the sideline as well enjoying a great performance on a lovely morning in the Castle. Danny and Jim are still weaving the magic. Brilliant.

Syl's Ladies make it four!

A remarkable milestone was reached on Sunday last when four players from Syl' s Adult Ladies team, featured on the Dublin Ladies Senior team which defeated Meath in a tightly contested game in Ashbourne. The starting line up included Sinead Tracey at full back, Niamh Mc Evoy at full forward and Sinead Aherne at corner forward. Nicole Owens made her debut at Senior level when she came on as sub in the second half. Meath as always dominated in the height department and in the physicality of their game. Sinead Tracey was more than equal to the challenge in the back line and the absence of any goals from Meath tells its own story. The forward line had to contend with a Meath sweeper and a heavy pitch so space was at a premium. Dublin looked the stronger team and deserved their three point victory margin. A good day out for Syls ladies, recently promoted from Junior to Intermediate level.

AFL1 SF St Judes 0-10 St Sylvesters 1-04 A point down with 10 minutes remaining, we were well in control but on a very greasy surface we just couldn't convert our dominance into scores. Six attacks ended with wides from frees and play and Judes broke away to score two fine points. The “Handsome Devils” and beautiful football.

The Brendan Mullarkey Memorial Trophy brought out enough hardy souls for a four team competition in Gannon Park yesterday. Declan McGrath and Philip O Connor organised and pay to play funds went to the Nicky Cleere Trust. The more experienced players were divided up and complemented by the younger players who could actually run and play the game. Niamh McEvoy and her friend played some beautiful football but were hampered by the lack of mobility in their fellow teammates. Rueben Kirrane scored a superb goal against the eventual winners but again some of the “more experienced” players on his team failed to perform on the day.

Minors 'pipped at the post' for the league title

MFL1 Final Ballyboden St Endas 3-05 St Sylvesters 2-07 What a shame for our fine Minor team, we led from the start and looked for most of the game like we would win our first Div1 title in a long while. We played with a mild but bitter wind in the first half, few nice points , flick by Meaney to Mark Hazely for a nice goal, solo effort from Fionn for a second and we led by 2-03 to 1-01 at the break.

St Sylvester’s GAA club notes 11 December

MFL1 Final Ballyboden St Endas 3-05 St Sylvesters 2-07 We couldn’t be more proud. Let’s celebrate them, their courage, skill and commitment, individually and collectively. All year in both football and hurling these players have given us the most memorable and inspiring performances and delighted us every time. This was another heroic effort from a magnificent team that lead almost all the way. One point was the difference in the end. Well done to everyone involved. You were brilliant all year and a joy to behold.
