Ball Wall unveiled - another good day for Syls

At a short ceremony in Broomfield last Sunday we unveiled our new Ball Wall training facility. It's been 6 years in the making but it looks like it was worth waiting for and will be a great addition to the club. Andy Kettle brought the Dublin Hurling silverware and gave a nice talk to dedicate the wall to Tim Stack, one of the men who brought hurling to Malahide and whose family gave a generous donation that got us started on this development. Andrew Stack was very impressive in the way he remembered many of the early hurling men. Syls Chairman Mel McIntyre thanked all those who supported the effort including our local politicians who worked hard for our cause, Fingal CoCo, The National Lotto and particularly Brendan Bannigan, Mick Stuart and Eddie Sullivan who learned a lot more than they bargained for about land leasing, planning laws and other aspects of development in post Tiger Ireland.

Many thanks to Aideen Murphy of The Medical Hall for sponsoring the day, very much appreciated and a great day out.

Senior Hurling B championship semi final Our odyssey in our first senior hurling championship came to an end at the semi-final stage in Parnell Park on Saturday evening. Parnell’s got the goals that ultimately made the difference but they were made to work very hard for every score. The obvious disappointment with the result reflects the level of ambition to succeed at this level and in time we will reflect on this campaign very positively.

Senior hurling Championship quarter final Naomh Olaf 2-9 St Sylvester’s 2-14 Reaching a senior hurling championship semi- final is a massive achievement for the club. This is our first year to play at this level and despite losing some of our most experienced players to emigration the management have developed the young talent in the club to compete at the highest level. Managers, Eamon Clancy and the long serving Leonard O’Carroll and Pat Keogh deserve great credit for their commitment and dedication. An away victory over Naomh Olaf’s was a monumental achievement they can justly be proud of.

St Sylvester’s GAA club notes 25th August

There was heartbreak for our Dublin representatives, Sinead Aherne and Niamh McEvoy with Cork coming out on top in the All Ireland semi-final and also for Lucia Hughes with defeat for the Dublin under 16s in the All Ireland final, also to Cork. Congratulations to all for your achievement in representing your county with great distinction at the highest level and there are even better days ahead.

Out top two adult football teams playing in divisions, one, and three are both leading their league tables and the junior A team moved up to joint leaders in division six with a win on Saturday. With just a few games left to play we are in for some exciting matches over the coming weeks. The individual management teams deserve great praise for their effort, commitment and cooperation in pooling resources.

The Dublin hurlers made us proud with a fantastic performance in today’s All Ireland semi-final. In what was a great game of hurling we came out on the wrong side of the result against a very good Cork team. Dublin will face Cork one more time this year in the ladies football All Ireland quarter finals on August 24tt

Des Barnes RIP - one of the greats.

Well done to the players and members who formed guards of honour for Des on Thursday. We had the Junior team from the '80s that Des managed, Brian's U14s at the clubhouse and Declan's U15s and Ladies at the Church. It was a sad day for the club but there was a great turnout of respect for Des and his family.

Small piece on Des Barnes by Eddie Moore

Des Barnes was a very talented footballer who played for St Sylvester's GAA Club from the mid 1960's until the early 1970's. He was too young to be a member of the 1963 Junior Championship winning side. His two brother in laws John Skinner Ryan (who died earlier in the year) and Paddy Ryan were members of that team. That side went on to Intermediate in the late 1960's and Senior in the early 1970's and Des was a part of this very successful period.

Declan Mc Grath is living proof that nice guys can finish first. His junior A football team have really made great progress and now added the Stacy Cup to their list of achievements. The team is a great collection of characters, ages, hurlers and very good footballers and is a great advertisement for the club. Great stuff
