Seniors Footballers navigate first hurdle in Championship

SFC 1st Rd St Sylvesters 2-16 Clontarf 3-07 Good game of football without really having the intensity of championship against Div3 Clontarf. With two goals in the first half, one a cracker from new Dubs star Jack McCaffrey, Clontarf put it up to us but we seemed to be able to respond with points from Micháel, Nigel and Mark and still lead 0-10 to 2-01 at the break.

Inters can't recover from slow start

AFL3 Na Fianna 2-12 St Sylvesters 0-12 Bit slow out of the blocks giving up two early goals, we matched them stride for stride thereafter but couldn't get close enough to put Na Fianna's goal under pressure. Not for the want of trying, Conor Colclough at centre back, Paudi and Damien in the middle, Ronan Palmer, Brian McCarthy and Kevin Casey all did well.

Seniors win away to Parnells

AFL1 Parnells 0-12 St Sylvesters 4-06 Great to see us scoring goals more consistently this year, Gary Sweeney, Conor Daly Two and Michael McCarthy the scorers today in a comprehensive, if never comfortable, win down at the hyper-active Chanel Complex. Shane O'Connor was brilliant in mid-field, Sweeney, Brennan and Conor Daly moved at speed and tormented their opposites, Collie Mc and Barry Ryan returned to serious competition with very impressive displays while new men Declan Rooney and Eugene Keating also looked impressive.

The Cleere brothers - as good as any that played the game

For the first time in almost 13 years St Sylvesters senior footballers will take the field without at least one of the Cleeres in the blue. Three of the lads captained Dublin at minor or U21 and all four played for Syls seniors between 2007 and 2010. In 50 years watching Gaelic Football I have never seen a bunch of lads play the game so fair, hit so hard and never ever utter a bad word, quite amazing, and an honour for Syls to have them wear the blue and green.

Seniors win over Judes

AFL1 St Sylvesters 1-09 St Judes 0-07 Played in difficult conditions with driving wind and rain, it was a typically tough physical encounter against Jude's. we played against the wind in the 1st half and came in 6 . 3 up at half time, with the whole team working extremely hard.

Inters too strong for Monicas

Loving Cup St Sylvesters 4-17 St Monicas 3-05 Very strong start with the wind behind us blitzed Monicas who did manage a few good scores mid second half. Again, lots of squad players getting time in our third win from four games. Mark Finnerty scored three goals.

Seniors recover well against Parnells

VdeP Cup St Sylvesters 1-16 Parnells 3-05 Started well, good points into the wind but Parnells took over for a while and racked up 2 softish goals and some nice points to lead by six but we finished the half with two points. Scooby goaled after some slick movement and we kicked on . . .Brendan told me we ourscored Parnells by 1-11 to 0-01 in the 35 minutes. The whole panel have been getting good game time in this cup competition.

Inters win the crossbar competition - lose the game

Conlon Cup St Sylvesters 1-10 St Vincents 2-09 Very entertaining cup game on Good Friday, looked like a cross-bar competition at one stage with first Ciaran Roche with a rasper bending the bar then Kev Clarke from an impossible angle finding the bar putting us 2 up. Kev did hit a few lovely points but our misses let Vins off the hook and we went in even at the break when we might have been six up.

Satisfying win at Ballymun

VdeP Cup Ballymun Kickams 0-11 St Sylvesters 1-12 Yet another tough game against the Dublin Champions on the all-weather on a really cold windy morning. Again, we did well into the wind in the first half leading 1-04 to 0-02 at one time and holding off a strong Mun run to go in about even at the break.

Teamwork does it for Syls

Great turnout Saturday morning to cleanup and paint the dressingrooms and around, well done to all the lads and to Joe Boyne for organising - Francine, Liz, Bren and Aileen also provided a fine lunch. I think we'll call this The First Annual Dressingroom Cleanup, isn't that right Joe.

Two great All Ireland club finals

Good first half key to seniors win

AFL1 St Sylvesters 1-14 St Vincents 1-06 A bitterly cold east wind made this a game of two halfs and holding Vincents to 2 points in the first half against the wind was the foundation of a good win. Vincents started quick and they opened us up for an early goal and picked off their points to lead by 6 but a smashing goal by Conor Daly after good play by Gary and a point from Eoin brought us back before the break.

Seniors win over Raheny

VedP Cup Despite being down to fourteen players from early on (Fionn was drawn into a schmozzle) we ran out comfortable winners over Raheny. We had a new look team on show with Michael in the middle with Mark Maher, Conor Ryan making his senior debut and Conor Meaney on the wing but it was Sweeney and Nigel who caught my eye for the bit I saw of this game.

Inters start well against Ballyboughil

Loving Cup St Sylvesters 2-10 Ballyboughil 1-02 Hard to believe we were down 1-02 to 0-01 after about 15 minutes but completely dominated from there onwards. Defensively we were very strong with new captain Colm Hanratty leading the way but well supported by Niall Higgens, Conor Quinn stepping up from Minor with Eoin O'Byrne in goals and a very lively Paidi Treacy.

Seniors pipped by Plunketts

AFL1 St Sylvesters 0-11 St Oliver Plunketts ER 1-09 Narrow loss after a pretty good game at St Margarets excellent facility. I don't know did we ever lead, we were four down at one stage of the first half, but we came back strong each time and certainly should have drawn if not won in the end. Plunketts came out quicker and could have been home and hosed but for some committed defense. John and Shane came more ito the game and Gary, Eoin and Micháel contributed a few points and we were only down by two at the break.

Two wins and a loss(&%$*&) in football

AFL3 Syls 0-08 Whitehall Colmcilles 0-04 Impressive win for Joe Boynes team, will post a report if I can get one. AFL6 we lost by a single point to James Gaels over at the Iveagh Grounds but the general consensus was that the game was drawn 0-08 to 1-05 but the ref made a mistake . . pity. AFL9 Syls 1-11 Na Gael Og 2-07 A last minute goal by Derek Roche gave us a one point win after we had trailed for most of the second half. "Ná bí ag caint mar sin" . . says Lenny to na gaeilgeoirí

Seniors off to a winning start out

In Kiltipper Rd tonight with a well deserved 3 points win over St Maurs, a very hardworking performance. Playing with the wind in 1st half we were 7 - 2 up at HT. We still led by 5 with a few minutes to go but a late St Maurs goal made it a nervy end, before Nigel struck a beaut to leave final score 11 to 1.5.

Cool McArdle seals VdeP Cup for Syls

St Vincent de Paul Cup Final 2012 Ballymun Kickams 0-14 St Sylvesters 1-12 A much disputed penalty coolly slotted home by Gavin McArdle gave us a one point win and our first trophy of the season. Kickams led for most of the game but never managed to shake off a suprisingly fit and competitive Syls, missing an also disputed (so, what penalty isn't disputed now that I think of it) penalty at about 50 minutes that might have sealed it for them.

Darren Clarke - nice guy, great player

After five years helping to make Syls one of the top teams in Dublin Darren has built his house in his native Ardee and transferred back to the Wee County. It has been a pleasure to watch him play football and we wish the very best for Darren, his family and for his football career in Louth.

Crokes qualify to meet Syls in Minor C'ship Final

There was a good Syls crew down at Bray Emmet's fabulous facility to see Crokes overcome Na Fianna by a single point in the other semi-final. Although they led from start to finish, mostly by three or more points, Crokes never put the game away and a late Na Fianna goal had us expecting (and probably fearing due to the bitter cold) a draw and extra time. Crokes excellent defense, however, had other ideas, and along with a more economical forward division probably deserved the win. We will have out work cut out but no doubt we will be well up for it, John, Panner, Paul and Super certainly have the lads preparing hard. LETS GET THE WORD OUT AND HAVE A HUGE SYLS SUPPORT AT THE FINAL
