De La Salle go down in another classic

Ernie Brenner's (our juvenile secretary) brother Stephen kept goals for the Munster Champions De La Salle Waterford in another classic club hurling encounter, losing by a point after extra time to Clarenbridge. I'm a big fan of John Mullane in particular and disappointed he didn't make the final.

Ormonde leads way for Fingal

FINGAL 4-18 MONAGHAN 0-13 St Sylvester’s Martin Ormonde hit an impressive 2-8 as Fingal cruised past Monaghan in Sunday’s Allianz NHL Division 3B at Lawless Park in Swords. The hosts were in command as soon as St Brigid’s full-forward Cian O'Mahoney pounced on a save from Monaghan goalkeeper Hugh Byrne and fired to the net to help them towards the half-time lead. Alan Morris and Andrew Richardson also featured.

So Liam, what did you say to the team before they took the field?

'Can we ask the children to leave the room' . . . . Liam managed the Tipp team who wrestled the Liam McCarthy Cup from the Mighty Cats in Sept 2010. He took some time to drop by the club and talk to our juvenile players and parents, a surprising number sporting the famous blue and gold. And our lads had lots of questions . . . Usain Bolt, Patrick Bonner Maher, Shane McGrath, Galway, I can't go there . . . a gentleman and a scholar without doubt and a nice treat for Syls, maith thú Liam.

The cobwebs are getting a good shaking

Fingal and Wicklow played a lively Keagh Cup game at Swords - Martin Ormande again featured well for Fingal while Alan Morris was mister flexibility playing at m wing back to wing forward but Wicklow stole it with a last second goal. I hear the minors are training in the morning, Dubs style, worth a try, we need to get back into contention in this grade. The U21s have already played a bunch of friendly games (good runout against Raheny this morning), should be a great game at Silver park next Saturday,

AHL7 Playoff - Syls 3-7, Isles 1-10 - . Our Junior hurlers recorded a well earned victory over Erins Isle in Finglas yesterday, which guarantees the team 2nd spot in the league and sets up a final against Whitehall, to be played some time over the coming 14 days. Trailing for most of the game, the team dug deep to eventually pull clear in the 4th quarter, with a late Johnny Conway goal from the penalty spot ultimately deciding the game.

Hurlers secure Intermediate status in a cracker

AHL3 Relegation Playoff St Sylvesters 2-13 Clanna Gael Fontenoy 2-11 Not for the faint hearted, Anthony Dunne blocked the ball onto the crossbar and away to safety in the 7th minute of added time to save our Intermediate status. At least, that's what I believe happened, it was difficult to see in the almost dark Broomfield after a tough game with no quarter asked or given. Pictures by Evan Walsh

Minor hurlers return to winning ways

MHC Syls 4-9 Brigids 2-10 Our minor hurlers responded well to their early championship loss against Raheny with a solid win against Brigids on Sunday morning. This result leaves us with a great chance of making the semi finals, provided we win our last group gam against Kilmacud Crokes. We were quick out of the blocks yesterday with early points from James O'Callaghan, Andy Smith and a long range effort from Stephen Keogh giving us an early cushion.

Junior Hurlers keep to their winning ways

AHL 7 September 5th Sylvesters 5-9, Erin’s Isle 3-5. From the throw in, Syls showed they meant business when Niall O Connor goaled after the first long ball went in and was knocked down by Johnny Conway. Leading 1-3 to no score after 6 minutes and playing against the wind, a loss of concentration let Isles in for a goal and coming up to half time it was 1-6 to 1-4 for Syls when a Colm O Connor shot was turned in by a defender to leave us up 5 points with a strong wind to help in the second half..

Inter hurlers go down narrowly to Whithall

IHC St Sylvesters 1-3 Whitehall Colmcille 0-10 Bit of a Jekyll and Hyde display by our lads. Defensively we were excellent all through, holding a handy looking Whitehall forward division to about 5 points from play and superbly supported by Anthony Dunne making two great saves in goal. We played into the wind in the first half and trailing 0-6 to 0-2 at the break seemed in a good position.

Junior Hurlers fine win in Championship

JHC Syls 4-14 Oliver Plunketts 1-4, In what we hope is a pre cursor for the Senior Football game, our Junior hurlers recorded an emphatic victory on Thursday night in their last group championship game. This was by far the teams most complete performance to date with no fewer than 10 players contributing their names to the scoresheet. We had 2 players in David Kennedy and Graham Morris celebrating their leaving cert results the night before and had reason to be nervous prior to throw in considering we drew with the same opposition in the league and we also knew a defeat would have eliminated us from the championship.

"Pull Hard" takes on a new meaning for Syls

Syls Tug of War team did little to distinguish themselves in the competition held as part of the Malahide Has It Festival. The big crowd who gathered on the Green on Sunday expected an experienced 8 to overwhelm the opposition but despite drawing Gilbert & Wrights (whose team included a girl!!-ok she was a 9th person as against our 8) our team, which seemed to contain more brain than brawn, did not get past the first round. Some are blaming the defeat on the management skills or Cathal O’Donnell, others on the coaching of Brendan Carney but those in the know believe that the absence of proper footwear did the damage.

Hurlers go down in Inter Championship

The Inter hurlers travelled to Silver Park on Friday evening but lost out 1-18 to 1-08 to Kilmacud Crokes. This leaves us bottom of the group with 3 losses and two more games to come in Sept - hopefully we will have some of our long list of injuries recovered by them.

Syls lads in Nicky Rackard action

A number of Fingal hurlers face fitness tests this Friday night before they know if they will face London on Saturday afternoon in the Nicky Rackard quarter-final at Parnell Park (1.30). Martin Ormonde (hamstring), Ross McGarry (elbow), and Emmet McCabe (hip) will be put through their paces on Friday night before being given the all-clear but manager Denis Murphy is optimistic that they will prove their fitness in time. Andrew Richardson (ankle) and Alan Morris (finger) - who both missed last weekend’s victory over Tyrone - will definitely be available for selection. However, Eoghan Cullen (fractured finger) is doubtful.

SPECIAL K SAVES THE DAY FOR SYLS

A last minute penalty save from keeper Billo Kirrane secured victory for Sylvesters Junior hurlers in their first outing in the 2010 championship. In a pulsating game in St Anne's Park, Syls beat Raheny by a scoreline of 5-10 to 5-07. The lead changed hands every few minutes throughout the game and at one stage in the second half it looked like we were dead and buried.
