Senior hurlers lose at Raheny

AHL2 : Raheny 1-16 St Sylvesters 1-13. (St Annes, Saturday 18th April) After a sluggish start , Syls recovered well to go in at HT just 3 points down 1-6 to 1-9, Colm Byrne the chief scorer with 1-5. During the 2nd half, we had a mini purple patch with 3-in-a-row from play, the pick of which was a fine high catch and point from Simon and although we never dominated Syls found themselves just a point in arrears with 6 minutes to go and all to play for.

Win and a draw in Junior Hurling

AHL6 Sunday 29th March 2015 Pairc Ui Bhriain Nh Olaf 1-9 v Syls 1-9 Conditions underfoot very poor in spots and a strong wind made the going very difficult. In the end we were relieved with the draw, but felt it was a game we could have won, probably took the wrong option a few times, going for goal when a point was on offer, but hindsight is wonderful. Hilary and Conor Dwyer saved the day with a couple of late points.

Hurlers lose to P Eoghan Ruadh

AHL2 St Sylvesters 0-11 Plunkets ER 3-12 We have a lot of players stepping up to senior hurling due to injuries, suspensions etc and, while we are disappointed to lose our second game, we are certainly encouraged by displays by Eoin McCarthy, Derek Morris, Dave McElligott, Conor Dwyer. Conor Ryan is an excellent fullback and there was a great tussle between Alan Morris and Dubs star Cian Boland.

NEW ADULT HURLING TEAM OFF TO A WINNING START

We have entered a 3rd adult hurling team this season for the first time in a number of years. The first league game was last Sunday and the lads got off to a winning start, beating St Pat’s Palmerstown by 5 points (3-15 to 3-10). The team is made up of a mix of young lads just out of minor grade, some old warriors who are refusing the hang up the hurl and a few players who are coming back to hurling for the first time in a number of years. Danny O’Connor and Jim Wardick are at the helm. A welcome return for the 2 most experiences managers in the game

Snr hurlers go down at Crokes

AHL2Kilmacud Crokes 3-12 St Sylvesters 0-11 A disappointing first out in senior league hurling, going behind to an early goal and never really threatening to gain control.

Senior Hurlers freeze against Marnog

Cup QF replay Syls 0-09 Nmh Marnog 2-07 Well, maybe the lads didn't quite freeze but the rest of us sure did. Marnógs raced into a commanding lead with a strong cold wind and rain in their backs, two 'unfortunate' goals from our perspective giving them a 2-07 to 0-05 point lead at half time. We scored the last three scores of the half, however, and came our fighting after the break.

Senior Hurlers almost happy with the draw

Corn Ui Laochra Nmh Marnóg 1-14 St Sylvesters 2-11 Colm Byrne hit the post with the last puck but it fell wide and we have to go again against neighbours Marnóg. It was a good all round performance from our lads, many making senior débuts. Stephen Keogh was in great form at corner forward putting in two great tackles to setup both goals, Kevin Clarke had a very lively game contributing 5 points from play, Conor Ryan reminded us what a fine hurler he is, Des Lehane also looking comfortable at this level.

Big year for Syls Hurling

A great turnout for the Minor Hurling fundraiser last night. Syls are facing into Senior Hurling League for the first time, have a third adult team and, for the first time ever, we have hurling teams at all age groups thanks to a good Academy program over the last five or six years and to Jimmy Deneher and John Crosse stepping up to the challenge at U16. Good luck to all, we are looking forward to another great year of hurling and hopefully a little 'silver' excuse for celebrating.

Extra time in Stephens Day Hurling

Not really, just felt like that in the most miserable conditions we have had for this St Sylvesters Annual Hurling tradition. Fair play to the lads, they didn't shirk it (lots did actually stay in bed but the picture tells the tale) and we had Brian McCafferty running rings around Tony Cooney, Conor Hoyne doing the running for Pat, Barry Crosse and Dara McLoughney impressing Leonard, we had three O'Connors and three Kennedys still competing and many of our own diaspora (including Dave Keogh home from Calgary) still able to swing the camán.

U21s lose to Whitehall

U21 HC B St Sylvesters 1-09 Whitehall Colmcille 4-12 Two late goals made it look worse that it really was but we trailed for most off the game and and probably cannot have too many complaints. That is not to say we did not compete well for most of the game but a period of Syls dominance mid second half, trailing by 4 or 5, yielded a few points when we really needed a goal and a mishit deceived David Kennedy and Alan Kavanagh to give Whitehall a goal against the run of play and our fate was sealed.

U21 hurlers win AET

U21 HC B Clontarf 1 14 St Sylvesters 2 13 (after Extra Time). This was a ding-dong battle in a match that looked like it would be all wrapped up early by Syls when they went in at the break leading by 1-6 to 0-4. From the first Simon Owens point to the great goal by full forward Stephen Keogh and a hat-trick of points from Conor Meaney and two from Colm Byrne Syls dominated throughout the field.

Danny Harrington reff'ing County Final

A Syls man, Danny Harrington, has been appointed to referee the Dublin senior hurling final on Friday night in Parnell Park between Kilmacud Crokes and St Judes. Danny ran our intermediate hurling team with Dave McBride a few years back, before he took his first successful steps into his refereeing career. This is Danny's first senior county hurling final, and indeed the first time also for a Syls man to do it, so everyone involved in hurling in St Sylvesters would like to wish Danny the very best of luck on Friday night

Minor Hurlers - We'll leave it there so!

Bernard and Mel completed a 12 year stint coaching from Nursery to Minor last Sunday and wish the best to all the boys who played for us over the years and gave us so much enjoyment. Thanks also to the families and club members who supported us so well over that time, we shared some great days and we hope to see the lads hurling away for years to come. Attached is our collage of team photos. Syls Abú.

Junior Hurlers into league playoffs

AHL6: Syls 2-14 O'Tooles 2-13 Sunday 28th Sept 2014 Broomfield Hillary was the hero with an injury time long-long range point from a free that dropped nicely over the bar. To prove it wasn't a fluke (we never doubted ya ) he already had 2 points ! chalked up from similar positions. Philip Browne scored a goal in each half, a touch of luck about the first, a touch of class about the second,

MHC B Gr4 Clan na Mara 1-12 Fingallians 0-09 A win was not enough to get through the group stages as Thos Davis beat Maurs and they both finished above us. We were happy with our win over a very skilful Fins outfit and a good open game but we never really threatened to run up a big score needed if Davis lost. Thanks to Scoil Ui Conail's Seamus Fennessy and Tommy Naughton for joining up with us this year to compete in minor hurling. We were competitive in all games and were happy with our hurling.

Minor Hurlers good display not enough at Maurs

MFC B St Maurs 2-16 Clann na Mara 1-12 Our best display of the year in the first half was not enough to give us the win out in Rush as Maurs finished stronger in the last quarter. This leaves us needing a win at Fingallians and other favourable results if we are to progress. Thanks to Mike Rose Nell for the pictures.

Minor Hurlers happy to draw, could have won

MHC B Clan na Mara 1-13 Thomas Davis 2-10 For the first half of the game Thomas Davis had the upper hand and controlled nearly every aspect of the game, which saw us coming in at half time with a 7 point defecit. Clan na Mara came out at in the second half playing like a different team, where we started getting to the Sloitar first and really pushing forward and chipping away at that lead.

Junior Hurlers bow out at quarter finals

JHC "C" QF : Raheny 0-19 Syls 3-7, Syls Junior Hurlers bowed out of the "C" Championship on Sunday morning losing by 3 points. 19 scores to 10 tells the story. Raheny were very lively and constantly posed a threat moving forward. In a gallant effort to contain them we conceded numerous frees, 10 of which were converted by an expert Raheny freetaker.

Hurlers pipped at the post

SHC B QF Setanta 0-14 St Sylvesters 2-07 Beaten by pretty much the last puck of the game but, in truth, the scoreline tells the real story of 14 scores to 9. A Martin Ormond goal mid first half and a Martin Casey one just before the break gave us a flattering 2-04 to 0-04 lead. We pointed on the restart but from there on it was pretty much all Setanta with the wind in their backs they picked off a steady, if slow, stream of points. Defensively we put up a great effort and Setanta only threatened our goal once when well handled to Anthony.

Junior Hurlers snatch victory from the jaws of defeat

AHL6 : Kevins 1-16, Syls 3-11 - Dolphins Barn, Sunday 17th August 2014 We led for about 3 seconds, the last 3 seconds as it turns out, as the Ref blew up for full time, much to the bemusement of the Syls line, Des Cahill ( Cuala were playing footie beside us) and a scrawny fox that ambled by ! But it was pleasing to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat as we've done the opposite often enough.
