Fortress Parnell . . hardly . . but a great evening nonetheless
Leinster U21 Hurling Final. Kilkenny hit us for 1-3 early, we missed easy frees and there was a sense of inevitability in the crowd, not the blind partisanship some of would have hoped for. We missed lots more frees, maybe 7 or 8 very scorable, and only lost by 4, 2-20 to 1-19, we got to within 3 but gave up a really crap goal, but the Cats always looked crisper in their catching and striking and it would be crass to claim we were the better team.
Glensman, hurlin' aye bae, dinnae ken fudball
The Antrim Co Board, led by none other than the venerable Dr John McSporran, himself a native of the Glens, have announced a promotional scheme that will introduce gaelic fudball to the residents of the Glens.

Hurlers go down to Faughs in JHC1
Not talking our chances . . not enough scoring power up front . . going asleep for periods . . . hard enough to figure how we lost this one. Even though Faughs looked a good hurling side for periods, we had more of the play and were rightly disappointed to lose. We need to beat Castlenock in Porterstown on Saturday to see who progresses to the quarter final.
3rd Team Stretch Unbeaten Run to 13 Games.
The third team defeated Thomas Davis in AFL 7 on Friday evening in Broomfield to extend their unbeaten run to 13 games in all competitions with their last defeat coming way back on 29/03. For the first twenty minutes of Friday’s game however it look liked the number 13 was going to be an unlucky one as Thomas Davis raced into a 4 point lead and were looking like they were going to establish a very healthy half time lead. With 10 minutes to go in the first half we got our first score of the half and this seemed to settle the team down.

Sweeney again to the rescue for Dublin Minors
We are surely destined to win the All Ireland, such is the resilience and never say die attitude of this Dublin Minor team - draw with Laois, draw with Offaly, now again with Kildare. And Gary Sweeney popped up with the equaliser when things looked a little glum . .
Seniors make it two wins out of two this week
After the win by the Junior 1 team against Thomas Davis yesterday evening, the senior team rounded off a good week for our adult footballers with a hard fought victory over Trinity Gaels at rain-soaked, windswept Broomfield today (Saturday 11th July). The few brave souls who turned up in the driving rain to witness this game were rewarded by the lads who provided a committed battling performance to win by the narrowest of margins against a Trinity Gaels team which never gave up and pressed hard for an equaliser right up to the final whistle.
Three wins and a loss in adult football
The senior team fought out a very good win against a determined St Brigids 2-10 to 0-13 at Blanchardstown to build on the recent draw at Marys. Next up is Trinity Gaels on Saturday evening at Broomfield. The Intermediates had an easier win 1-15 to 0-6 over Finians of Newcastle, the Junior 1 team won well over St Vincents 0-11 to 0-6 and the Juinior 2 team lost I think.
AHL 7 in Broomfield Friday 3rd July 2009 at 7.45 pm
St Sylvesters 3-14, Thomads Davis 2-7 The junior team got the weekend off to a good start with a great team performance helped by three first half goals and had eight scorers overall. The defence was in excellent form throughout with a great understanding between Ciaran Murray, Killian Kirrane, Paul Christie, Eoin Duggan, Paudie Duffy and Mark Healy.
Dubs disappointed not to beat the Cats
Happy not to be hammered, disappointed not to be closer or even to win, funny how refs can give and not give frees (Limerick folk will understand). 'Come on you boys in Blue' was sung with real feeling. It was a credit to the team and the crowd when the whole attendance stood and applauded at the end. Roll on the quarter finals, we're still hopeful.
Hurlers win over Trinity Gaels
The Intermediate hurlers got back on the winning trail with a less than comfrotable win over a game Trinity Gaels team on Saturday evening. We controlled the game from start to finish but never put the game away and had to battle towards the finish to hold on for a good win.

Syls victorius in Croke Park
St. Sylvesters Malahide U-8 Football team showed the Dubs how to do it, beating Kildare team Johnstownbridge in the Go Games Tournament held at Croke Park on 2nd July. This was a day that the 10 players and their families will never forget, from arriving on the team coach, to togging out in the dressing rooms, running out the tunnel, warming up in front of the Hill and going on to give an exhibition of football on the immaculate surface of Croke Park.
Minor lose in stop start effort
The Minor A team lost by 8 points to Na Fainna in Broomfield in a game that mirrored the lazy summer evening - we played, we stopped, we started again - seemed like we weren't too sure whether or not we wanted to win this one. Na Fianna lead by 1-5 to 0-0 at half time and eventually won by 3-8 to 0-9.

List closes Thursday evening as the list is due to Parnell Park on Friday
Fingal Hurling - another good year
Dublin hurling is making great strides these days at juvenile, colleges, underage and senior level. Entering Fingal in the National Hurling League and Nicky Rackard Cup has been another fine development and St Sylvesters are proud to be part of it. Congratulations to our County Board on their vsiion and to Danny O'Connor, Hillary Murray-Hession, Alan Morris, Andrew Richardson and Conor McCafferty in particular for another successful season of Fingal Hurling.
U/14 Dublin North v Antrim - Syls players involved
In recognition of our division 1 status in U14 hurling we have 6 players involved in the Dublin North game against Antrim recently, from left Paul McBride, Jordan Lawless (injured unable to play), Conor Dwyer, Colm Byrne, Alan Kavanagh & Joe Bannigan.
Dublin Minors win again in extra time
FROM HILL16.IE - Dublin are into their first Leinster MFC final since 2003 after overcoming Offaly in this semi-final at OConnor Park, Tullamore on Saturday evening. The Dubs did it the hard way as they surrendered an early seven-point lead, had corner-back Seán Swords sent off (two yellows) in the 33rd minute, before the game eventually went to extra-time.
U13 hurlers bring home silver in the Shield
U13 hurlers bring home silver in the Shield with a good performance in the PJ troy Tournament held at Thomas Davis Gaa . Even though this is a 13-a-side competition we struggled with numbers due to holidays,Gaeltacht, illness and Ardara trip. A squad if 14 players had to get a through a tough 4 match schedule in the sweltering heat in Kiltipper road.
Dublin v Offaly - Leinster MFC semi-final - 3 Syls involved
Dublin make two changes for their Leinster MFC semi-final against Offaly at OConnor Park, Tullamore on Saturday (5.15). Philip Ryan comes into the attack for the injured Cormac Diamond while Kevin OBrien has replaced Mark Schutte in defence.
Junior Footballers - Team of the Month
In what was an extremely busy week for our adult footballers the 3rd team was the only one to win all 3 of their league games. The 6 league points they picked up during the last week has brought them right back into the promotion race in AFL 7.
U15 hurlers in action for Dublin North
Attached are of pictures of three lads from Syls U15 Hurling team who were selected for the Dublin North development squad. They played a friendly against Antrim last Sat in Fingallians. They won the game by 10 points and all three Conor Ryan, Brendan Flood and Kevin Mc Loughney acquitted themselves very well

Meet the Dublin Hurlers
Friends of Dublin Hurling wishes to congratulate the Dublin senior hurlers in reaching their first Leinster hurling final in eighteen years. It was a tremendous performance against Wexford in Nowlan Park on Sunday last. Well done to Dublin u-21s who have also reached the provincial final.
U12's trip to Ardara - thanks for the support
Syl's U12's travel to play in Adara Co Donegal. We have participated in this tournament for the last 5/6 years and it is a credit to Syl's player's, mentor's and parent's that we continued to be invited to back year after year. The Mentor's, Stephen, Paul and Hugh as well as the parents have done a great job fundraising to help fund the trip and kit out the team with tracksuits. The U12's will be supported by our U11 Squad. I want to thank our Chairman Eddie O Sullivan and our Executive Committee for supporting and making a contribution to cost of the trip. On behalf of St Sylvester's I want to thank all concerned for their efforts and wish the players and parents all the best for the week-end. Enjoy the trip and hopefully you get a good run in the tournament.
Team of the Week - Junior1
All the football teams are doing well lately but the Junior team in AFL7 had a particularly good June
Under 15 & 16s hurling round up.
2 entertaining midweek hurling matches played in excellent conditions in Bridgefield. Our under 15s showed tremendous spirit in defeating Erins Isle by 15 points, with the goals coming from Kevin McLoughney, Sean Kane, and Killian Haverty who made his first start at this age group. Towards the end Jordan Lawless shipped a late tackle and is now out for 6 weeks with a shoulder injury.

Dublin and Fingal Hurlers win.
Congrats to Hillary, Alan, Andrew and Conor and the Fingal hurlers on reaching the Nicky Rackard semi final. And the Dubs, finally overcame Wexford with a nervous enough display . . now for the real deal.
Syls Maintain 100% in Div 1 U11 Football
Played out in warm and cloudy conditions in Phibsboro, Syls U11 maintained their 100% Div 1 record in a hard fought match with Na Fianna. Na Fianna have had the upper hand in recent times, but today Sylvesters came through by the narrow margin of 2 points.

Bit of a roundup
In Group B Nicky Rackard Cup, Monaghan were beaten by Fingal, the Dublin side coming through by 1-18 to 2-13. I'm sure we had a part to play - Declan will advise.
Dublin Under 14 Girls Defeated by Cork at Toomevarra
Three late goals at the end of the first half put paid to Dublin's chances in the All Ireland Under 14 Semi Final played in Toomevarra this afternoon with the Rebelletes overcoming the Jackies by 5-9 to 1-8. Syls were represented by Under 14 stalwarts Kim White and Emer Treacy and both girls put in solid performances.
Seniors lose a game we should(could) have won against OP/ER
It was a bit of a Jekyl and Hyde display from Syls against the star studded Oliver Plunkets Eoghan Ruadh. In a way we might be pleased with the overall display . . in other ways we were very disappointed to lose a game where we came on strong and then didn't finish the job.
Second defeat in a week at Porterstown
Another heavy defeat for our U13 hurlers, following a similar fate for the U14 at the same Castlenock venue earlier in the week. Eamon McLoughney was great around the middle of the field, Eoin McCarthy was lively and brave in goals, Danial Colclough made a guest appearance and looked comfortable, Paddy Mc had a good game alongside Paul Ryan upfront, Jake came off injured, pity, he is playing great lately.
U13Bs good show against Nmh Olaf
Lovely evening again at Bridgefield for the visit of U13 Div5 table toppers Naomh Olaf. After a slow start Syls battled their way into the game to hold Olafs to about 5 points in the end, a very solid display.
Great win in Junior Football Championship
A tight battle until up to the last 10 minutes, then Syls took over and won convincingly in the end. This continues the good run for all our football teams at the moment.

Syls entertain Bredagh fro Co Down
U16 Hurling: Syls 4-15 Bredagh (Co. Down) 5-15 An entertaining game played in Broomfield against a well run Belfast club who were in Dublin for the 2 games in Croke Park. Since a lot of lads are unavailable due to the Junior & Leaving Certs we fielded an experimental side with a mixture of under 15s/16s and first year minors back-boning the team. For the second week in a row we had a couple of under 14s competing very well in under 16 friendly games. Well done to Jordan Lawless and Philip Browne.
County scene coming into summer - slowly.
Croker got a bigger crowd than expected or muted during the week. It was a little cold and two sleepy displays did not do much to excite us . . . but, we did win both games so we can worry about the niceities another time.
Girls in All Ireland Semi Final v Cork
The Dublin U14 squad play their All Ireland Semi Final V Cork on Saturday 13th June at 3:30pm in Toomevarra Co Tipperary. Best of luck to the squad, all support welcome. Good luck to Emer Treacy and Kim White and all the girls.
U11 2 out of 2 in Div 1
On the day summer 2009 ended, St Sylvesters U11 Footballers made it 2 out of 2 in Division 1 by defeating an excellent Ballymun Kickhams in Pairc Ciceam. After a week of record temperatures, this match was played out in a blizzard on the excellent all weather surface.
Syls hurlers in Nicky Rackard Cup action
Conor McCafferty is starting at full forward and Alan Morris, Andrew Richardson and Hillary Murray Hession are on the bench V Roscommon at Athleagu 3.00 on Saturday
AFL7 win well - Hurling off
AFL 7 Ballymun Kickhams 1-05 St. Sylvester’s 2-15 . . . Corn Cietin (Scheduled for tonight - 5th June) St. Sylvester’s v Whitehall Colmcille’s - Whitehall have conceded as they can’t field tonight.
The Monaghan influence on football!!
From "Talking Balls" Last week at an unnamed location, at an U-8 football blitz, a bit of sideline jundeyin' that would have put Mickey Moran and Tyrone doctor Seamus Cassidy to shame. With one team playing out of their skin, the other team were obviously told at half time to 'up the physical ante.'
Big games for AFL7 team
The 3rd team have a couple of important games coming up that deserve support from around the club.
Hurlers draw with Barrog
AHL3 - St Sylvesters 4-8 Naomh Barrog 2-14 . . . . The AHL7 team were awarded yet another walkover, that's 3 in a row I think - poor show for these lads as they were going well.
Team of the Week - Syls Bar Staff
A number of people remarked on the huge amount of work the bar staff had to put in over the weekend with events on pretty much all the time and the highlight was the midnight concert on Sunday night - well done to Gary, Declan Hedgo (the real Hedgo) and the lads.
U13s take to the beach
After a disappointing display on Saturday the U13s decided to try the beach for training this evening . . . not much got done but we certainly weren't disappointed . . . it was georgeous. And the intrepid Bernard had to swim out to Ireland's Eye to rescue a drifting dingy . . . the whole beach cheered, it was great!! Actually, we all ignored him, just part of a days work for the bould Bernard.
Street Leagues Finals - Another Wonderful Day for Syls
Well, we did it again - 200 players, 17 games, 34 teams, grannies, grandads, burgers, ice cream, bouncy slides . . . and the weather showed up just right. Sylvesters Annual Street Leagues Finals was another great day for our club and for the Community. Hearty congratulations to Ciaran Meehan and his team for a job very well done. Read Ciaran's message below.
St Sylvester’s Club Notes 01 June
Our senior footballers were in great form defeating Raheny by 1-14 to 0-4 last Wednesday. All the adult football teams are doing well in their leagues with the juniors taking pride of place on full points from 7 matches.
Syls ties with famous Cavan team of '47
The death occured recently of Father Dan Deneher, uncle of Jimmy who coaches at nursery and U8 with Syls. Dan was a member of the famous Cavan teaam of 1947. Have a look at the cutting from the paper supplied by Jimmy. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam usail.
Hurlers lose to Vincents
AHL3 vins 2-16 syls 1-12. Not a happy visit to PNU - word was that Vincents had a few verty good players. AHL7 cuala could not field, w/o to syls - second walk over in a week - not good news for the hurlers.
Thos Davis out hurl us at U13
Trouble on the M50 had us late to Kiltipper Road and we took the field with the first 15 out. That didn't seem to bother us and we lead by two good points and spurned a couple of others bufore Davis' got into their stride.
Syls U11 footballers win in the sun
It was a wonderful sunny summer morning in Bridgefield and both Syls U11 football teams obliged with encouraging victories in their first ever Division 1 League games against strong opposition from Donaghmore/Ashbourne
Syls Girls Feature in Under 14 Leinster Championship Final
Congratulations to Kim White and Emer Treacy from our Under 14 Division 1 Team in putting in superb displays for the Jackies in clinching the Under 14 Leinster crown against Meath. Both girls put in terrific performances.
Playing pitches at Bridgefield
The Club views with considerable alarm any proposal to convert one of these pitches into an extension of the existing car park. We wish to place on record the following observations regarding this proposal.
Hurling and Football League Tables - AFL10 Team Top of the Pops
We are now well into the new leagues and pride of place goes to our Junior Footballers in Division 10 North, 100% record after 7 games. The Inter team are second in Div 4 and the Seniors and Junior A teams are also going well. Both Hurling teams running well in their championships. See the tables as at 28th May
Seniors in good form on a beautiful evening
It's great to win well, no stress for Gabriel, reasonable crowd (I thought there would be more), lovely sunny evening, all kind of laid back.
Football still going well - Inter and Juniors win
AFL4 - Inters won at Bridgids - 7 points to 5 AFL 10N St. Pats (D) 0-04 St. Sylvester’s 1-12
Garda vetting
As part of the Garda Vetting process, all mentors must complete attached forms and return them to the club in a sealed envelope with your name on it and also mark it for Norma Murphy's attention. The actual Garda Vetting Document must be completed on both sides on 1 page.
Club notes 24th May
Our Féile hurling team, playing in division 2, reached the semi finals but lost to St Jude’s who went on to overall victory. Our thanks to St Judes, St Brigits and Kilmacud Crokes for the excellent organisation and hospitality we enjoyed during Féile.
Le Roc - the quintessential GAA man
The Corkman was on about the retirement of Le Roc. I have to admit you had to like the guy and he will be missed - he seemed to epitomise the quintessentiall GAA man - big and tough (he'd kill ye, legally or otherwise), he got the crowd roaring with a big catch or a big play . . .
Bit of a buzz on Saturday
Crowd back after the Feile na nGael, crowd in after the Leinster Minor game in Portmarnock, crowd in for the Heineken Cup Final, the growing legend of Joe Fortune drew a big crowd dancing into the small hours - just a normal Saturday at Syls.
Hurlers battle in Feile semi
The U14s had another busy Saturday, this time with the hurling Feile division 2. We won our first tow games, a point over Kevins a dn a bit more against Faughs but came a bit of a cropper against Plunkets ER. That sent us as group losers to Russel Park to play a smart looking Judes who had won the other group and were just too strong for us on the day as well. Brendan sent the full story.
Vintage Sweeney helps save the Dubs
How can you be vintage at 17 years . . . anybody who has ever seen Gary gliding through a defense will know what I mean. The Dubs trailing by a point, time running out, Sweeney picked up a break near the middle, turned on the after burners and was on the 21 before the Laois lads caught him. Dublin equalised off the free . . . . and won in extra time.
All Feile na nGael venues are playable.
As of this afternoon , all Feile venues are playable. The Division One venue was moved last Wednesday to DCU Sport Grounds, Glasnevin , off Ballymun Road ( note this venue not located in the actual Campus). However, we have been informed Carrickhill , Nh Mearnog ,is no longer available to host the Finals.
Music and Sport in the Club
Busy schedule of live sport and lots of music - starting with the Heineken Cup Final on Saturday - keep an eye on the Calendar below also (if I remember to keep it updated)
