Minor Bs win at Cuala
MFL4 Fair play to Shay and Padraig and the boys, they kept their cool after a few heavy defeats and re-grouped for a fine late win away to Cuala. Great to see Danny, Thomas and Josh back in the team. Sean Foley put in an impressive second half in the middle, well supported by James McKenna Byrne and Sean Quinn.
Inters can't recover from slow start
AFL3 Na Fianna 2-12 St Sylvesters 0-12 Bit slow out of the blocks giving up two early goals, we matched them stride for stride thereafter but couldn't get close enough to put Na Fianna's goal under pressure. Not for the want of trying, Conor Colclough at centre back, Paudi and Damien in the middle, Ronan Palmer, Brian McCarthy and Kevin Casey all did well.
Seniors win away to Parnells
AFL1 Parnells 0-12 St Sylvesters 4-06 Great to see us scoring goals more consistently this year, Gary Sweeney, Conor Daly Two and Michael McCarthy the scorers today in a comprehensive, if never comfortable, win down at the hyper-active Chanel Complex. Shane O'Connor was brilliant in mid-field, Sweeney, Brennan and Conor Daly moved at speed and tormented their opposites, Collie Mc and Barry Ryan returned to serious competition with very impressive displays while new men Declan Rooney and Eugene Keating also looked impressive.
U9 Girls Match Report 21 Apr 2013
St Sylvesters played an U9 girls blitz last Sunday. Foxrock/Cabinteely provided the opposition. With the aid of two girls from Foxrock/Cabinteely ,St Sylvesters provided two teams. The teams captained by Abby McCabe and Gemma Devally. Though the morning started out very damp, the matches were played in beautiful sunshine to the delight of all. Abby's team registered a loss and a win, Gemma's team registered a loss and a draw. The games were highly entertaining and a good time was had by all. Our next match is against Ballyboden St Enda's and St Judes on Sunday 28th at 10:00.
Junior hurlers impressive win in C championship.
JHC C Syls 3-13 Cuala 0-5 After recording 2-17 in their first league game it was another strong showing up front with 3-9 of the 3-13 total recorded from play. Next up we have Plunketts on Tuesday 30th of April. They are playing in AHL5 vs Cuala who are competing in AHL7 so we expect a far stiffer test.
U13 hurlers win over Craobh
Syls u13 hurlers got their 2013 season off to a flying start last Saturday afternoon in Bridgefield with a 6-5 to 2-5 win over a good Craobh Ciaran team, a team Syls struggled againt in u12 last year. Syls got off to a slow start and tended to stand off and admire their opponents a bit in the first half.
U8s at St Margarets
Team Photo of Team Yellow from U8's 2013 who played St Margarets on Saturday, also in Photo is Louise Ryan (St Sylvesters, Minors & Senior Football Panel) on her first game as a GO Games referee, Louise did an excellent job!
First ever win in Senior Hurling for Syls
SHC B St Sylvesters 0-14 Nmh Barróg 0-10 In our first ever game in Senior Hurling Syls defeated neighbours Nmh Barróg in a lively enough game in Broomfield. Defensively we were excellent all through holding a useful looking Barróg forward line to two or three points from play and never leaving Hillary exposed. Midfield looked more balanced with the two O'Flynns but up front we relied mostly on frees from Martin Ormonde fron Casey's ball winning efforts.
Minor hurlers let it slip
MHL2 St Maurs 3-11 St Sylvesters 3-07 Tough uncompromising game, we went behind early but fought really hard to get ahead by three at half time, goals by Simon and Eoin K, points by Shane, Colm Byrne and Eoin Mc and some terrific defending by Barry, Killian Power and two super saves by Danny. We stayed in front up to about 5 minutes remaining thanks to a well taken Colm Byrne goal but a combination of missed scores into a difficult wind and a Maur's goal saw us edged out.
Ladies U14Féile - Thank you
To the Secretary of Naomh Mearnóg and St. Sylvesters, This is just a short note to congratulate both your clubs on behalf of Ballyboden St. Endas for yet another fantastic Féile weekend.
U9 Girls Match Report 14 Apr 2013
St Sylvesters hosted an U9 girls blitz last Sunday. Garristown and Na Fianna provided the opposition. St Sylvesters provided two teams captained by Lisa Ryan and Caoimhe McComish. On a very blustery day, Lisa's team were undefeated, beating Caoimhe's team and drawing with Garristown and Na Fianna. Caoimhe's team beat Na Fianna, but lost to Garristown and Lisa's team. The girls on both teams played well and all had an enjoyable morning.
News from the girls Feile
Anthony sent a report and sent a few pictures, Peter sent a few also but the girls were having too much fun, couldn't have been the serious matter of Feile . . . I hear we had great support from our parents in setting up the fields and co-hosting eight teams with neighbours Nmh Marnóg and many thanks to all who helped . . . and, we made the semi-finals losing to Ballyboden . . . and Peter Hickey has pictures at gaapics.ie . . .
The Cleere brothers - as good as any that played the game
For the first time in almost 13 years St Sylvesters senior footballers will take the field without at least one of the Cleeres in the blue. Three of the lads captained Dublin at minor or U21 and all four played for Syls seniors between 2007 and 2010. In 50 years watching Gaelic Football I have never seen a bunch of lads play the game so fair, hit so hard and never ever utter a bad word, quite amazing, and an honour for Syls to have them wear the blue and green.
Minor girls and Scoil Iosa
Last week the Minor Girls lost their game V Ballyboden St Endas. This was their first defeat. Unfortuanately Scoil Iosa Girls also lost in the Leinster Semi Final V a very strong Dunshaughlin team. Congrats to John Mangan & Ann Uí Mhórdha for getting them so far
Seniors win over Judes
AFL1 St Sylvesters 1-09 St Judes 0-07 Played in difficult conditions with driving wind and rain, it was a typically tough physical encounter against Jude's. we played against the wind in the 1st half and came in 6 . 3 up at half time, with the whole team working extremely hard.
Six National Hurling League medals for Syls
NHL3A Final Fingal 1-09 Donegal 1-05 Although low scoring it was a fairly comfortable win for Fingal to gain promotion to NHL2B in 2014 against the likes of Meath, Roscommon, Down,Armagh, Mayo. All six Syls players played a significant part in the win - Hillary with two important late saves, Graham and Alan Morris in a very steady full line, Andrew and Kev O'Flynn on top in the middle and Killian very busy coming off the bench early in the second half.
St Sylvester’s GAA club notes 14-04-2013
The hardest working team on Saturday were the multitude of volunteers manning the massive effort to host the girls All Ireland Féile in Broomfield. We reached the semi-final with a series of great victories. The future looks bright for the ladies section with this excellent team.
Inters repeat over Monicas
AFL3 St Sylvesters 4-20 St Monicas 4-07 In a repeat of last weeks Cup win the Inters put on an impressive display of scoring in a game with four penalties.
Update on Ladies Football
Great to see Lucia Hughes score a point for the Dublin U16 girls in their Leinster championship match against Offaly. Niamh McEvoy made a return to the Dublin seniors after injury and it is super to see her back in action. The senior girls beat Margaret's by 2 pts on Wednesday with great displays by Carol Hickey, Lisa Murphy and Aoife O' Flynn. The u15 girls won well away to Ballyboden and the U14 girls were convincing winners out in Newcastle against St Finians. The girls are in Feile action next Saturday which is being hosted in both Syls and N Mearnog with 48 teams in action over the day and the finals on Sunday in Parnell Park!
Barbara McMahon RIP (Linda Meehan's sister)
We send our condolences to Linda and Ciaran Meehan on the passing of Linda's sister, Barbara McMahon whose funeral was last week. Ciaran would like to thank their friends for attending the funeral and for kind wishes and calls to Linda.

Everbuild Building Products are coming on board as sponsor of the feile for the 5th year, Matt O' Dell ( Managing Director Ireland ) says "that we as a company are delighted to sponsor such a worthwhile event showcasing the amazing talent in Gaelic football "
Minor hurlers lose to Boden
MHL2 St Sylvesters 1-07 Ballyboden St Endas 4-07 Couple of softish goals against and a couple of top class saves by the Boden keeper were the difference in Broomfield. Simon Owens, Killian Haverty and Shane Nangle in particular were excellent and overall we competed all over the field but a few little things made the difference.
Junior Hurlers start well
AHL6 Syls 2-17 Civil Service 3-9 Impressive start to the season for our Junior hurlers, with 11 different names on the scoreboard and all our scores coming from play. Next up we host Cuala in the Junior C championship on Sunday 21st of April.
Great win for hurlers in league opener
AHL3 St Sylvesters 0-17 St Vincents 2-08 Really gutsy display by the hurlers, short a number of regulars and losing Andrew and Kevin to injury during the game, we held up strong at the back and took enough of our chances. Dara Flats and Ronan Kennedy were magnificent at the back., Killinan O'Flynn had a really busy time in the middle contributing a few excellent points while David Casey was the pick of the forwards.
Inters too strong for Monicas
Loving Cup St Sylvesters 4-17 St Monicas 3-05 Very strong start with the wind behind us blitzed Monicas who did manage a few good scores mid second half. Again, lots of squad players getting time in our third win from four games. Mark Finnerty scored three goals.
Seniors recover well against Parnells
VdeP Cup St Sylvesters 1-16 Parnells 3-05 Started well, good points into the wind but Parnells took over for a while and racked up 2 softish goals and some nice points to lead by six but we finished the half with two points. Scooby goaled after some slick movement and we kicked on . . .Brendan told me we ourscored Parnells by 1-11 to 0-01 in the 35 minutes. The whole panel have been getting good game time in this cup competition.

Fingal reach NHL3A Final with 6 Syls onboard
Congratulations to Fingal reaching the NHL £A Final next week after 2-11 to 1-09 win over Donegal. Five Syls players started (Alan, Hillary, Graham, Killian and Andrew) and Kev came in before half time. I'll post the fixture
Inters win the crossbar competition - lose the game
Conlon Cup St Sylvesters 1-10 St Vincents 2-09 Very entertaining cup game on Good Friday, looked like a cross-bar competition at one stage with first Ciaran Roche with a rasper bending the bar then Kev Clarke from an impossible angle finding the bar putting us 2 up. Kev did hit a few lovely points but our misses let Vins off the hook and we went in even at the break when we might have been six up.
Congrats and good luck Connor Sammon
Great honour for local boy and former Syls player Connor Sammon starting for Ireland against Austria in the World Cup qualifier in the Aviva. Connor played up to minor (Pat O'Byrne or Danny Relihan's team??)
Minor Footballer and Hurler Awards
Congratulations to Conor Mullarkey and Colm Byrne on being awarded Minor Footballer and Hurler honours for 2012 at the medal presentations on Saturday last (remember these were deferred from the Awards Night due to the lads playing in the minor football final). Congratulations to all the players who had a very successful year in both codes.
Mary Shiels (Gemma Hazely's mother) RIP
St Sylvesters would like to extend our condolences to Gemma and Derek on the passing of Gemma's mother Mary Shiels last Saturday. and to her five grandchildren playing with the club, Amy, Ross, Glenn, Mark and Jack. Funeral Mass 10.00am in Rivervalley Swords. Go ndeana dia trocaire.
Viva le Hurling . . .French student visit
A group of 38 students and their teachers from the Angers region of France dropped by to watch and participate in a Minor/U15 hurling session. The weather was not too kind but, fair play to Sandrine Lagarde and her crew, they were good sports and got the most from their visit. Thanks to the U15 lads for making up the numbers and to Bernard, Ronan and the lads . . . Viva le hurling!!
Minor girls win at Clontarf to go top in Div1
Sorry to see the lads lost to Clontarf in the Minor game at the weekend. The Minor Girls were also due to play Clontarf at home this weekend but conceded home advantage because of the state of the pitches in Broomfield and played away on Monday night in Clontarf instead. The girls had a great win Syls 4-6 Clontarf 2-5 in what was a very close game in Division 1. Conor Barry Manager of the Dublin Minor Team was an interested spectator.
No juvenile fixtures Easter weekend
A Rúnaí, a chara, There will be no Juvenile Fixtures for the Easter Weekend. Please make your Mentors aware of the 2013 Juvenile Fixtures Calendar ( issued November 2012) which can be found in the downloads sections of the website. .This maybe of particular interest to U/8 , U/9 & U/10 Mentors
Minors lose to Clontarf
MFL1 St Sylvesters 1-04 Clontarf 2-10 Playing against the wind we trailed eight points to one at the break but goaled on the restart and, with the wind in our backs had a chance to recover. It didn't happen however, competing well in general play but too often taking the wrong options we fell to what looked like a heavy defeat in the end.
Satisfying win at Ballymun
VdeP Cup Ballymun Kickams 0-11 St Sylvesters 1-12 Yet another tough game against the Dublin Champions on the all-weather on a really cold windy morning. Again, we did well into the wind in the first half leading 1-04 to 0-02 at one time and holding off a strong Mun run to go in about even at the break.
Syls hurlers in Croker win with Fingal
There were six Syls hurlers involved in the Fingal NHL3 win over Fermanagh in Croke Park last evening, Cillian and Kevin O'Flynn making their debuts I think, Alan Morris, Hillary and Andrew with Graham Morris also on the bench. Hill16.ie report attached.

Teamwork does it for Syls
Great turnout Saturday morning to cleanup and paint the dressingrooms and around, well done to all the lads and to Joe Boyne for organising - Francine, Liz, Bren and Aileen also provided a fine lunch. I think we'll call this The First Annual Dressingroom Cleanup, isn't that right Joe.
U15s hosted Carryduff from Down
St Sylvesters hosted the Carryduff under 15 hurlers and footballers on St Patricks morning. In what were two keenly contested games the Carryduff boys came out on top .
Mixed results for 4 U12 teams
Bridgefield was a hive of activity last Saturday 16th March with the U12 Footballers field4 teams all at home. With the bank holiday weekend and players unavailable due to sickness and a birthday party we were hard pushed to fill the panels, in the end we filled all panels except for the A team with 6 boys who had just finished a B match having to go straight in to the A line up.
Two great All Ireland club finals
Congratulations to all four teams on what must have been the most exciting pair of finals in years . . . 13 man Kilcormack Killoughy just pipped by St Thomas and Ballymun Kickams very unlucky to lose to a last minute point by a a talented St Brigids.
Adult championship draws
That time again - no dates or venues yet.
St Sylvester’s GAA club notes 10th March
Pat and Nuala Brennan ran their 5th very successful gala fundraiser recently in the Grand Hotel. Their video on the website outlining the work of the Laura Brennan Foundation is their remarkable tribute to Laura. No words are adequate. www.laurabrennan.org
Good first half key to seniors win
AFL1 St Sylvesters 1-14 St Vincents 1-06 A bitterly cold east wind made this a game of two halfs and holding Vincents to 2 points in the first half against the wind was the foundation of a good win. Vincents started quick and they opened us up for an early goal and picked off their points to lead by 6 but a smashing goal by Conor Daly after good play by Gary and a point from Eoin brought us back before the break.
Laura Brennan Charitable Trust
Hi everyone, It is now almost 5 years since Nuala and I first established the Laura Brennan Charitable Trust. Over the past year the level of applications has increased significantly and thankfully we have been able to help all those requesting help thanks to your wonderful donations and support to date.

U13 hurlers off to a flying start
Syls u13 hurlers got their 2013 season off to a flying start last Saturday afternoon in Bridgefield with a 6-5 to 2-5 win over a good Craobh Ciaran team, a team Syls struggled againt in u12 last year. Syls got off to a slow start and tended to stand off and admire their opponents a bit in the first half.

Today over in the Thomas Davis Ground Scoil Iosa Senior Girls Gaelic Football Team had a comprehensive win against Old Bawn S.S. Tallaght in the Leinster Quarter Final. Scoil Iosa 4-12 Old Bawn 1-3. Once again the girls put in a very strong display and are now in the last four in the Province.
U12 footballers fielded 4 teams
Congratulations to all involved - The U12 Footballers fielded 4 teams across 4 locations on Saturday morning which is probably a first for any age group! The A footballers opened their campaign away to a very strong Castleknock side who finished 3rd in the league last year. We got off to a good start with an excellent point by Conor Hoyne followed up with a goal punched to the net by Denis Smith.

A few pictures from David Rafferty . . .
Seniors win over Raheny
VedP Cup Despite being down to fourteen players from early on (Fionn was drawn into a schmozzle) we ran out comfortable winners over Raheny. We had a new look team on show with Michael in the middle with Mark Maher, Conor Ryan making his senior debut and Conor Meaney on the wing but it was Sweeney and Nigel who caught my eye for the bit I saw of this game.
Inter hurlers battle to win by one
Corn Ceitin Tight one point win against a battling Thos Davis in Broomfield. Continuing the 'Band of Brothers' theme we had three Morris's in defense with Derek putting in a brave performance in goal and Graham and Alan manning the left flank.
U15 hurlers start with a win
U15H Div2 St Sylvesters 6.08 Kevins 1-08 Although fielding only 13 players wewere too strong for Kevins Hurling Club at Bridgefield.
Minor As lose at Cuala
MFL1 Today saw Syls Minor A's travel to Cuala to be defeated 0-10 to 1-4 in the Minor Football League division 1. Syls started slowly and could not really get out of the blocks in the first half. We arrived at half time 0-5 to 0-2 down.
Minor Bs lose to Finnians
MFL4 We stayed in the game for most of the first half, good defense
Minor Girls Div 1 & Scoil Iosa Leinster Qtr. Final
After Syls. Minor Girls won the Div 3 Championship in October 2012, we were put into Division 1 for the 2013 Minor League. We felt that we should have been put up into Division 2 again this year for the League, but accepted the County Board’s decision at the end of the day.
U11 football v Castlenock
In Bridgefield Saturday - two games - few pictures here
U10 football v Clontarf
Three games in Bridgefield on Saturday - few pictures here.
Inters start well against Ballyboughil
Loving Cup St Sylvesters 2-10 Ballyboughil 1-02 Hard to believe we were down 1-02 to 0-01 after about 15 minutes but completely dominated from there onwards. Defensively we were very strong with new captain Colm Hanratty leading the way but well supported by Niall Higgens, Conor Quinn stepping up from Minor with Eoin O'Byrne in goals and a very lively Paidi Treacy.
Pat Bonass RIP
Pat Bonass, a player of the Panner era and long time supporter of St Sylvesters has passed away. Pat is maybe best remembered for instigating the Cheltenham week at Syls and I'm sure there will be a few good tales in his memory at the upcoming festival. We send our condolences to Pats wife Helen and his family and friends. Removal to Seabury Church Wed evening at 6.15pm - details from RIP.IE attached
Seniors pipped by Plunketts
AFL1 St Sylvesters 0-11 St Oliver Plunketts ER 1-09 Narrow loss after a pretty good game at St Margarets excellent facility. I don't know did we ever lead, we were four down at one stage of the first half, but we came back strong each time and certainly should have drawn if not won in the end. Plunketts came out quicker and could have been home and hosed but for some committed defense. John and Shane came more ito the game and Gary, Eoin and Micháel contributed a few points and we were only down by two at the break.
GOLF SOCIETY NEWS FEB'13

U15 footballers win over Cuala
Our u15 A’s won a decent game of football in Bridgefield by 1 pt . We started with 14 men and although we gave away a soft goal in the first 2 minutes the lads fought hard to get back into the game. At half time we were 6pts to the good but as often happens we took our foot of the gas and let the Cuala boys back into the game.
U 13 A strong win over Ballymun – 6g12p to 2 g 8 p.
St Sylvesters U13 Grading – the lads continued their strong form with a win over Kickhams at a cold and windswept Bridgefield last Saturday afternoon. Some great displays across the park again. Brian Murray played a stormer and was knocking points over from long range.
They think its all over.....it is not, its a game of two halves.
St Sylvesters U13B 4-5, St Finians U13B 4-4 On Sat 23rd Feb 2013 I witnessed one of the best comebacks ever, up there with Liverpool v AC Milan in the 2005 champions final or Dublin v Longford in the 2008 O'Byrne cup final (Dublin scoring two goals in the last few mins of play), well that's the special game we had on Sat.
U12 A Hurlers start with a win
While our B team had a bye, the U12 A hurlers got their season of to a flying start with a good win over a strong St Vincents team. Due to the weather we haven’t had much opportunity to hurl and that showed in our early play but as the game wore on we got stronger and stronger. As the B’s didn’t have a game it gave us the opportunity to add a few subs so we went out with 16 players while the opposition could only muster 12.
Colclough save seals it for Minor Hurlers
MHL2 Ballinteer St Johns 0-09 St Sylvesters 0-13 Leading by a single point with a minute or two remaining, Johns had scored the last two points and a rasper to the top corner was brilliantly saved by Danny Colclough to keep us alive. We lifted the siege and a well taken point by Conor Dwyer and a long free from Colm Byrne gave us our first and probably deserved win of the season.
Club notes St Sylvester’s GAA club.
Shane O’Connor and Ross Hazley begin this year’s roll of honour with Sigerson Cup winner’s medals for DIT who defeated a highly fancied UCC in the final. What a great honour to be part of this historic first victory. Two nice guys finish first.
U8 hurlers make their debut
Some pics of the U8's first hurling game of 2013 - It was last Saturday in Scoil (Clontarf) That's snow falling in the photos by the way. Great morning was had by all, except for the parents who forgot to bring their hats & gloves! As you can see, FUN, Sportsmanship, Respect for Mentors & Referees very evident in the photos. Best of luck to coaches Eamon Burke and William Rooney and their newest Sylvesters . . . Peter Hickey
