U21 footballers leave it too late
U21 FC A Skerries Harps 1-11 St Sylvesters 2-06 A disappointing display by the U21s who only got going with two very late goals but Harps were composed enough to take another point and win by two. A feature of the game was the magnificent display by Skerries full forward Harry Dawson, made the journey north worthwhile and we look forward to seeing more of Harry in the light blue of Dublin in the coming season.
St Sylvester’s GAA club notes November 11th
The under 16 hurlers play Crumlin in a play off for the league title next Saturday in Bridgefield at 14.30. Bernard and Mel have kept a big squad of players together and this will be an excellent game to come along and see their skills. It could be the game of the weekend? Please come out and support them
Mouthguard offer from local dentists
Being well aware of the incidents of trauma resulting from Sports injuries I complement the Club via the County Board in insisting that all GAA players in Football wear sports gumshields. It should always have been mandatory as is the hurling helmet for our hurling squads. In Dentistry prevention of trauma is the best cure.
Mouthguards will be compulsory for Juvenile Footballers
From January 1 2013, the wearing of Mouthguards will be compulsory for juvenile footballers in matches and in training. The club have organised for a specialist (Philip McCann Laboratories) to come in over a number of nights in November to measure and fit customised mouthguards, I understand that these will cost between €35 and €40.
St Sylvester’s GAA club notes Nov 4th
The intermediate football team drew with St Monica’s in their last game of the league and qualified for the play offs. This is a great achievement and the prospect of senior football next year for this team is a mouth watering prospect. Don’t miss the play offs.
Syls in the hunt for second senior football team
AFL3 St Monicas 3-05 St Sylvesters 1-11 Couple of late points snatched the draw to qualify us for the AFL3 playoffs and a chance for Syls to field a second senior football team in 2013. A feature of the game was a fantastic goal (from a Monicas perspective) from their evergreen player manager Vinnie Murphy. Semi final next week against Na Fianna
U21 hurlers win over Craobh
U21 HC B St Sylvesters 1-11 Craobh Ciaran 1-06 U21 is an interesting grade these years, jammed in at the end of the season and this year coincides with the Minor competitions. Because it is only championship we pull teams together every year like a 'rabbit from a hat' and yesterday was no different - Minors, Juniors, Senior footballers, Senior Hurlers (ok, next year) playing together for the first time . . . I have always liked this grade but it has always been difficult for Dublin to accommodate it (going back to the 60's) . . . pity, but I don't have any suggestions . . .
Minor Hurling Championship called off due to rain
The ref called the game against Erin Isles before the start as it was raining very heavy. Five or six of the lads had played in the U21 game yesterday and it would have been interesting to see how they performed.
U14Bs finish on a high at Lucan
It might have been cold looking on from the sideline but the Syls u14b side put in a second half performance that warmed the heart and put them into the Div 8 final. Playing against a Lucan Sarsfields side at 12th Lock the Syl's lads started slowly, kicking against the stiff wind they struggled to contain a confident Lucan side who seemed to score at will and had a good deal of luck for one of their goals - while the Syl's lads had to work very hard to raise a flag. At half time they changed around with Syl's trailing 3-5 to 1-2.
Minutes silence at U12 hurling
The under 12s took on Plunketts ER in their last game of the season with some lovely hurling played by both sides - I think we lost by a few points. The game was preceded by a minutes silence for one of the Plunketts members, Martin O'Dwyer who died suddenly. Well done to Eugene, Dave and Paudie Duffy.
Congrats to Kickhams and Crokes
Congratulations to Ballymun winning the Senior Football Championship after 27 years. There were a lot of Syls lads in Parnell, no doubt planning and plotting how we might scale those same heights. We are the only team to defeat Kickams in any competition, drew after extra time in the VdeP final (replay still to be played) and lost by a point in the league (a result we disputed on the night, thought it was a draw). Good luck to Kickams in Leinster and the All Ireland, no doubt we will cheer you on.
Coaching courses and workshops
Please see below a list of the workshops & Courses coming up in November. It’s our busiest month! We will only have 1 or 2 workshops in December and then a break until late January. I’ve included details on Practical workshops, Code of Best Practice workshops & Our Coach education programme (Foundation & Award 1 Coaching Courses)
Syls Girls first ever Minor Championship
The Sylvesters ladies made history earlier in the year by entering a team in the Minor League and then in the Championship for the first time in the Clubs 109 year history. For most of the year the Minor team was made up of U17, U16 and even some U14 Players. The only actual U18 Minor Player Aisling Gill came beck from injury for the Championship Semi Final and she also played in the Minor Final yesterday Saturday 27th October 2012. Everyone else is eligible to play Minor football in 2013.
Syls u16 Girls – Another Tremendous Season ...
Nuala & I had the pleasure of managing the Girls u16 squad this season. We played in Division 2 of the League and with just 2 narrow defeats all season we managed to finish 2nd in a very tough league campaign. We were placed in Division 2 of the Championship and this was a competition that we really wanted to do well in. Our first game of the round robin group phase resulted in a heavy defeat to Foxrock/Cabinteeley.
Girls win Minor Championship - runners up U16
Congratulations to Eddie, Aine and Declan and their Minor Girls winning the Ladies Minor B Championship over O'Dwyers - I'm sure Eddie will send a report - thanks to Martin for the picture. Congratulations also to Pat Brennan and the U16 girls who lost their final to Cabinteely at UCD on Friday evening - again, I hope Pat can send a report and pictures.
Impressive minor win in C'ship
MFC Gr St Sylvesters 2-19 Templeogue Synge St 0-06 Big score in the end but this was a fine competitive game for 40 minutes before a goal gave us 1-10 to 0-06 lead and we never looked back. David Sexton put on a show of point scoring from all angles and was well assisted by Collie Byrne and an also deadly Mark Hazely.
16Bs lose to Clontarf
U16 Div7 Top4 SF St Sylvesters 3-06 Clontarf 5-06 A good game, the lead changing all the time on a nice afternoon in Bridgefield. We gave up a few softish goals late in the first half, recovered after the break but missed a penalty and four or five scorable opportunities when we should have moved ahead. Clontarf finished strongly with four points on the trot, we got one back but gave up a goal just on the whistle.
Inter Footballers still in the hunt
AFL3 St Sylvesters 1-08 Na Fianna 0-08 No report but this was a very significant win over high flying Na Fianna for the Inters and I think guarantees a promotion playoff spot with one game left against Monicas. Decland tells me "Syls will need to get a result in their final league game against Monica's on Sunday 4th November to ensure a place in the promotion play-offs."
Breaking Ball - workshop
John Morrison takes a football workshop this Friday 26th on Breaking Ball @ 7.30 - venue is O Tooles GAA Club. The workshop is for all age groups and to book text your name and club to Aileen on 0851273012. Panner

Girls go close in Leinster Final
Ladies Leinster IFC St Laurences(Kildare) 3-7, Syls 1-11 Congratulations all round on a wonderful season. I'm sure Brian will give us the wrap up.
Hurlers lose narrowly to Maynooth
The score in the Intermediate hurling match was Maynooth 0-11 Syls 0-9 It was very even all through the match with the team’s level on 7 points each at half time. Our defence was excellent and restricted Maynooth to very few scores from play. Ronan Kennedy and Graham Morris were really excellent all through the match. Andrew Richardson and Russi Cleere in midfield were at the heart of everything.
Minor hurlers two in a row
MHC B Sylvesters 0-10 Naomh Barrog 1-6 This was a very tight, physical and feisty affair. Conor Dwyer was glad that his helmet offered the protection he needed. There was nothing easy on offer and scores were hard earned by both sides. We battled hard in every position and were deservedly in front by three points with five minutes left. Barrog burst through to score the only goal of the match and level the scores.

Seniors go out in atrocious conditions
SFC QF St Sylvesters 0-06 Kilmacud Crokes 1-06 Yet again we went out of the championship in very unsatisfactory circumstances, the conditions an insult to the amount of work and commitment the lads have put in over the year. Good luck to Crokes in the final on Sunday, of course they played in the same conditions and no doubt, if we had won I would probably ignore it but . . . . See match reports and comments
Ladies Win in Leinster Semi
The Ladies Leinster Championship semi final in Broomfield on Sunday afternoon served up an absolute cracker of a game. Played in front of a bumber crowd from both Malahide and Tinahely this game had it all from start to finish. The Syls girls had the best of the early exchanges and led by 2pts. However the Tinahely team was packed with Wicklow County Players and they came roaring back with a goal from 2011 All Star, Lucy Mulhall. The visitors started to take control for a period and finished the 1st half strongly to lead by 2pts at the break
Minor footballers draw at Ballyboden.
After some great competition with Boden last year, our minors continued our rivalry with a hard fought draw. Minor Football A championship St Sylvesters 2-5 Ballyboden 1-8 Sylvester’s didn’t score for the first twenty minutes but they managed to level the scores by half time at 5 points each. The game could have gone either way in the second half with both teams showing great spirit and determination.
Report on Ladies Leinster SF
Leinster Intermediate Ladies Club Championship Semi-final: St. Sylvester's 1 – 16 Tinahely 3 – 6 The Ladies took a step closer to Leinster glory by beating Tinahely of Wicklow in a nailbiting encounter at Broomfield on Sunday afternoon. They dominated possesion, as reflected in the number of scores for each side. However, they squandered much of that possesion, especially in the first half when they missed three shots at goal, including one rocket from Katy Slattery that crashed off the crossbar and rebounded 20 metres, along with half a dozen point efforts that went wide
Senior Girls in Leinster Final
I was in Broomfield today as a supporter in the Leinster Intermediate Semi Final Syls 1-16 Tinahely 3-6 and was very proud to see Syls qualify for the Intermediate Leinster Final next week. The following is a quote from the Dublin Ladies web site:
U11 hurlers against Vincents
Saturday morning was a fesitval of hurling in Bridgefield with the U11s taking on St Vincents in tow games - we lost the A game to very talented visitors with a high level of skill displayed by both teams - I think we won the B game where the skill and commitment was also of a very high standard - looks good at U11 - the Syls goalkeeper and wing forward warrant special mention.
U10 hurlers at home to Brigids
Just caught a few pictures of the U10s in Bridgefield on Saturday morning. Congratulations to Ronan and Mick, looks like we have some special hurlers coming through.
HOME INSTEAD SENIOR CARE sponsor our U14 Footballers

Junior footballers fall at last hurdle
AFL7 St Vincents 0-11 St Sylvesters 1-06 A spirited but ultimately disappointing display saw Vincents lift the AFL7 title from under our noses at Marino. We were well in the game all through but couldn't find our way through the Vins defense. At the other end our defense were very frugal but Vincents didn't miss a single point effort and got maximum reward for their efforts. Nonetheless it was a great season for these lads, promoted to AFL6, good run in the championship and Parsons Cup win last week so lots to look forward to next year.
U14 hurlers win of table toppers Lucan
St.Sylvesters 4 – 8 Lucan Sarsfields 1 – 6 Syls under 14 hurlers had a good win against Top of the table Lucan Sarsfields on Saturday last at Bridgefield. Although having to line out without team regulars Jamie Kennedy who got injured in training on Wednesday last and Niall McCann ( both of whom attended the game ) who has been ill Syls got off to a horror start with Lucan registering 1 goal and two points before Syls got off the mark with a well taken point by Eamonn McLoughney.
St Sylvester’s GAA club notes October 7th
SFC St Sylvester’s 1-13 St Oliver Plunkett’s /ER 2-6 The senior football team put in a remarkable second half performance to overcome a six point deficit and qualify for the quarter finals. Darren Clarke and Micheál McCarthy provided the vital scores. The large support will be looking forward to the next round. The intermediates were unfortunate to lose out Cuala in their quarter final.
Minor hurlers impress at Kilmacud
Hopefully Brendan will send a report but I heard the Minor Hurlers were very impressive in Silver Park with a 10 point win over Kilmacud Crokes in the B Championship.
Seniors finish strongly to reach quarter finals
SFC ST SYLVESTER’S 1-13 ST OLIVER PLUNKETT’S/EOGHAN RUADH 2-6 Great second half display saw us overcome a six point deficit and win going away. Michael McCarthy and Darren got the scores, Ross and Bracken were magnificent in the middle, Beano, Kian and Galvo in defense as we finally overcame Plunketts to qualify for the quarter finals. Great shout for Syls as we chipped away at the deficit, well done, the lads deserved it. See the report from hill16
U16s pipped by disputed goal
U16HC B Thos Davis 2-10 St Sylvesters 1-11
Brave Inters lose to Cuala
IFC QF Cuala 0-12 St Sylvesters 0-09
U16 Girls also in Championship Final.
With the Intermediate Team in the Leinster Semi Final And The Minor team in the Championship Final we traveled to Clontarf last Wednesday 26 September 2012 to see Pat Brennan's U16 Team take on Clontarf in the Championship Semi Final. They did not disappoint and were on top for most of the game eventually winning with the score Clontarf 4-5 Syls 6-11. This is a very good result for Syls away against a very good Clontarf team. They will now face Foxrock Cabinteely in the Final.
U11 Footballers win Seamus Reilly Tournament
Our U11 footballers were invited to enter the inaugural Seamus Reilly Tournament organised by Dunshaughlin GAA which took place last Saturday evening. The tournament was organised in memory of the late Seamus Reilly, a former teacher in St Davids, Artane mentor to Dunshaughlin U11s and friend of Niall Guiden.
All Ireland Ladies 7's
This Saturday, 6th October, Broomfield will be hit with an invasion of ladies footballers as we jointly host the All Ireland 7s. The intermediate competition will be held on pitches 1,2 & 3 in which our own girls will take part. Our games schedule is as follows:
Ladies win in Crettyard
Ladies Leinster Championship St Sylvesters 5-13 to Crettyard’s 1-7 Another convincing win sees the girls march on in the Leinster Intermediate Football Championship. Peter has pictures at gaapics.com A stylish display saw the girls run out convincing winners . Niamh Mc & Sinead Tracey were in great form in the middle of the field. Ciara Lynch, Anne Clarke & Niamh Harney kept the back line tight all day. Up front, Katie, Lisa Murphy & Sinead Aherne, kept notching up the scores. Overall a job well done by the whole squad on the day. The girls now have a home semi-final v Tinahely of Wicklow on the 14th October. A huge thanks to all who travelled to support the girls.
JUNIOR FOOTBALLERS WIN PARSONS CUP
Syls Junior Footballers continued their fine season with a hard fought win over Robert Emmets in the Parsons Cup Final on Sunday. The game, played on Emmets home pitch was a tough encounter and the lads had to dig deep to come through on a score line of 0.13 to 1.6. We play St Vincents away next Sunday morning in the final league game. We are top with 26pts and Vincents are second with 25pts. Both teams have been promoted and this game will determine who wins the league. Please get out on Sunday morning to support the lads.
St Sylvester’s GAA Club notes 30th September
The junior a football team won the Parson’s Cup with a 0-13 to 1-07 score over Robert Emmett’s. They play the league decider next Sunday away to St Vincent’s at 11.00 am. Declan McGrath and his management team have recorded thirteen wins with just one loss in a remarkable league campaign.
Naughton salutes Syls passing Tower test for Inter cert
ST SYLVESTER'S 2-11 ROUND TOWER (C) 1-10 TWO old friends met along the Parnell Park sideline on Saturday evening. Both were wearing bainisteoirs bibs. Emmet Carroll, the Boden Bolt, played for Dublin when Tommy Naughton was in charge of the Dubs. Emmet is making a good fist of his entry into management as Clondalkin's Tower men can look forward to life in the Senior B ranks next season. But it was Tommy who went home with the six numbers as Syls emerged from a pulsating contest that had the big crowd on the edge of their toes.
V de P final drawn after extra time
VdeP Final St Sylvesters 1-14 Ballymun Kickams 0-17 after extra time. Cracking game in Broomfield from start to finish. A feature for Syls was the display of Alan Foy who contributed a marvelous goal and a number of long range points. It was a pretty tough uncompromising game that will serve us well in preparation for Plunketts next Saturday.
U8s play half time of VdeP Final
Well done to the U8s and their mentors who put on a show of tough committed football at half time of the St Vincent de Paul Final at Broomfield.
Hurlers finish the league with a draw
AHL3 St Sylvesters drew with St Judes. Collie Byrne was fetching high balls in the middle, Derek Morris in the corner and many changes from the Championship winning team of last week but we still were not beaten.
1992 Minor Reunion - Sat Sept 30th
1992 was a very successful year for Syls, winning the Minor A Football, runners-up in the Minor A Hurling (not a lot of people know that) and our Minor B footballers winning their championship. There is a reunion of all these lads next Saturday (after the Vincent de Paul Cup Final - make a day of it) . Derek Roche gave me a copy of the Minor Football program, attached. Anyone else got any memorabilia we could share.
Sylvesters join elite band
It was a bit of a topic in the club after the hurlers win last Saturday so Mick Stuart compiled the following: This year, 2012, there are 39 clubs with Senior status in one or both of hurling and football. (Senior status is determined by Championship; Senior B hurling has been included). Of these, 16 have dual senior status, that is, in both hurling and football. They are:
Girls reach Minor Championship final
Congratulations girls - Please see attached photographs of Girls Minor Championship Semi Final Saturday in Broomfield. Nice one of Declan Hetherton & Michael McCarthy on sideline. Michael did the warm up with the girls before the game and stayed to give them big support in the first half before leaving to join the Senior team for their win V Ballyboden.
U15 footballers win in the championship
The Under 15 footballers produced probably their best performance of the season when it mattered most in accounting for Lucan Sarsfields on a scoreline of 9-10 to 4-4 in the quarter-final of the C championship. Senan McNulty and Seán Foley were in great form and built on the platform established by centrefielders Eoin Cooney and Max Sheridan (on loan from the U14s) to guide Syls into the semi-finals.
U14 hurlers win at Castlenock
U14H D2 Castleknock 0 - 7. St Sylvesters. 5 - 16 On Saturday last the under 14 hurlers made the trip to Porterstown to take on Castleknock in a vital league match . Although missing a number of regulars through injury etc the Syls team travelled in hope to face a much fancied Castleknock team . Although Syls got of to a sluggish start a tremendous goal from Luke Hughes kick started the Syls fightback. Some fine fast hurling followed from the Syls boys and at halftime Syls were a couple of points to the good.
Hurlers Dublin Champions
IHC Final St Sylvesters 2-09 Round Towers Clondalkin 1-08 We weathered a storm and won going away. It was a cracking second half after Syls had dominated the first and led by 1-06 0-02 at the break. The second half was a different story, Towers reeled us in with a goal and a string of points before taking the lead with about 8 minutes remaining. Syls stood tall however, Andrew, Ronan, Darragh winning ball in the middle, Martin and Casey upfront and Gareth McGrath goaled and Martin pointed.
U14 cup football
John Keenan sent a few pictures - I think Ciaran will send a note on the game.
St Sylvester’s GAA club notes 23rd September
Dublin Intermediate Hurling Champions 2012 It was a four point victory at the end of a pulsating match that released a dam burst of relief and absolute joy. Tommy weaved his magic and the players did the business on a great day, especially for the experienced stalwarts.
Seniors qualify for semi finals
AFL1 St Sylvesters 2-10 Ballyboden St Endas 3-09 Congratulations to the senior footballers qualifying for the AFL1 playoffs for the fourth season in a row with a hard fought win over Boden. Lot of football yet to play this season - St Vincent de Paul Final next Saturday.
U16 hurlers finish the season unbeaten
U16 Div3 The 16s recorded a high score against Parnells at their fabulous new facility at Chanel - wow, what a place, to finish joint top with Crumlin (we assume we have a playoff for the league).
U12 hurlers reach Camaint Final
Well done to St Sylvesters u12 hurling team who reached the Final of the Division 2 Camaint Cup last Saturday in Parnell Park. In the Semi-Final we had a great win over our great rivals Skerries Harps. Unfortunately we had to give best to a very good Craobh Chiaráin team in the final. Throughout the competition the lads show great heart and teamwork combined with no little skill. Well done lads, we are all proud of you. Keep up the good hurling!’ - Eugene
U16s top Div2
U16 Div2 Football: Syls 4-15 Lucan 2-5 With Lucan just 2 points behind Syls in the league this was an impressive and important win for Syls and moves them into joint top spot in Div 2. The win also guarantees a place in the league play-offs.
Inters impress at the Naul
IFC St Sylvesters 1-15 St Margarets 0-09 Very impressive display by the Inters winning comprehensively over Margarets. The football and especially point scoring from both sides was top class. We have a mostly very young side and we moved the ball quickly off the foot, never giving Margarets time to crowd us.
St Sylvester’s GAA club notes 16th September
The big one next week is the Intermediate Hurling Championship Final against Round Towers in Parnell Park next Saturday at 5.45. Don’t miss it. Next Friday night is Fight Night in the Wright Venue. Doors open at 7.15. It will be a really good night’s entertainment and an important fundraiser for the club. Please come along and support.
Juniors lose in Semi
JFC B SF James Gaels 3-07 St Sylvesters 0-06 We started well with points from Killian and Keith but we weren't getting much return from a period of dominance and James broke away for a goal from a penalty and followed with another from some loose defending. We finished the half with a couple of points but trailed by 3 after having a slight wind down the hill.
Girls move on in Leinster
Ladies Leinster Inter Championship - The girls ran up a good score against a very game St Kevins from Louth who battled hard but could not match the power and movement of the Syls outfit.
Chairmen, past and present
After the recent EGM we spotted a 'gang' of Chairmen of St Sylvesters - Eddie Sullivan, Mick Stuart, Christy Riley, Brian Colgan, John Ryan, Micky Howard, Ciaran Goan. And, of course, we missed lads like Terry Roche, Ciaran Creamer, Brendan Reilly, Glen Troy and others who have contributed so much to Syls over the years.
Dunne and Daly Deadly Duo !!
SFC St Sylvesters 5-12 Raheny 0-05 Ok, I'm pushing it . . . but Nigel with 3-1 and Connor with 2-2 (including a super solo effort in the first half which helped to settle us), were both in top form in this backdoor playoff. Michael hit 6 or 7 points and laid on at least one of the goals. Good display against what was probably a weakened Raheny (see attached report from Hill16).
Minor Championship Fixtures
At long last, some serious minor club action to look forward to. John and Super are putting in some serious preparation with the footballers for tasty looking clashes with Vincents, Boden and Templeogue while Colm and Eddie have high hopes for the hurlers against Crokes, Isles and Barrog.
Syl's practice wall
Last Thursday was a great day for the Club, great turnout (300+), all sections represented, with players happy to see the support from the broader membership, parents able to see the future in GAA for their kids, senior members proud to see the club they nurtured over the years blossoming and committee members, team mentors etc. encouraged to see an endorsement of their efforts. The unanimous support for the resolution was a vote of confidence in the future development of St. Sylvester's.
Football Final Tickets
The list for those wishing to put their names down for the draw for All Ireland Football is on the board. Please note the club will get a very very small allocation of tickets . The list will be taken down on Sunday at 6:00 Many Thanks Brian
Syls Girls Leinster Fixture
Syls adult girls play Louth champions St Kevin's in the Leinster championship this Sunday at 12 noon in Broomfield. Please come out and support the girls in this big fixture.
From Juvenile Secretary
Firstly, a big thank you to all of you who contributed to and helped get such a big turnout for the EGM last week. The next big off-field event in the Sylvesters calander is the White Collar boxing -v- rugby club which, as most of you will be aware, is being held on Friday 21st September next in The Wright Venue.
